Creeking from rear suspension I think.

Hi all! Has anyone ever had any creeking from the rear of their car? I went to Oulton to see the F3/GT festival yesterday and on the way the car developed a 'creek'. It was worse when pulling away when it sounded awful and it sounded like there was something rubbing as the noise sounded like something was catching as it rotated. It did it in or out of gear but was worse in gear when pulling away when torque load on the running gear seemed to be at it's greatest. The weird thing is, it has got better but is still there. This could be a coincidence but the off side rear (where the noise was loudest) seems slightly lower than the near side. Could something have happened to the torsion bar set up? I thought the torsion bars were on splines though??? Any help would be much appreciated, as I'm puzzled at present. I've not had the car up in the air with the wheel off yet and it seemed to drive perfectly well. Cheers

Sounds like rear anti roll bar bushes?

I am not too technically minded but the creaking sounds familiar....

Best regards,

It does sound a bit like bushes but it's sooo loud! Sounds like the cars going to break in half!

Well Kris,

There was this story from a chap with a white 911 2.4 T Targa who went over a humback bridge and the car did break in half. However, this shouldnt necessary be the case with you![;)]

Best regards,

Bert

The worst sound which ever came from a 911 Supersport we had, was when a rear wheel bearing failed... Was intermitant at first, mainly on certain corners, but was soon all the time... When it first happened my other half was driving and thought the exhaust was dragging on the floor....[8|]

Maybe worth a quick check would only take a few mins....

I would check for a failure of the drive shaft couplings, especially if there is any vibration that goes with the noise. These are not expensive to replace and are an easy DIY fit.

To check them remove the rear wheels and inspect the rubber gaitors for tears and rips. There are two per drive shaft, the inner one by the gearbox and the outer one by wheel hub. There should bea lot of black grease under the gaitors. Any tear will allow the grease to leak out and you will run with a dry bearing and this could lead to the noise you mention.

Its unlikely to be the torsion bars or suspension as there are no moving parts to speak off so I'm thinking final drive

good luck

Thanks for the replies fellas. I hadn't thought about wheel bearing but I will check that. Wheel bearings are adjustable on these aren't they? If so, hopefully it can be adjusted. Car hadn't been used for a couple of weeks but is usually laid up for a few weeks at a time. Bruce, I'll check out what you say tonight if I have time. Thanks again for the replies! [:)]

Take a wheel off and send us digi photos of the spring plate and cover, roll bar, drive shaft and cv joints - that should cover it.

Could also be that the ARB mount has broken loose. Its common and there is a stronger replacement.

I agree with Richard on the ARB mount. Happened to me and caused creaking. This is a known factory weakness apparently.

Cheers again for the replies. The ARB mountings look fine on initial inspection. I'll take a closer look later. Are the ARB mountings any different on a supersport? The reason I ask is I can't remember if the ARBs are different. Going to be Sat before I get to look at it as I'm rushed off my feet at present but will get back to everyone soon. Cheers

Hi All! Looked at the car last week and nothing seemed to be wrong. Noise has also disappeared so not sure what it was at this stage. I guess I'll have to see if it reappears. Cheers

Kris

Sure it wasn't your knee's, I know these clutchs can be hard on the joints....lets hope El motor is fine[:)]

Well I had an op last year, cruciate ligament reconstruction, so wouldn't be surprised![:D] So far soo good, just the burning fans to deal with now!
