crickets in the heater, and a snake in the dash

Ive got what sounds like a cricket in my heater!.. When I drive along with the fan off I get a cricket type squeak, however if I turn the fan on to any setting it goes away. If Im stopped with the fan on 1, I also get the squeak, however if I turn it to 2 or above, or turn it off it goes away.. Im thinking its the blower fan oscillating and squeaking, but not 100%.. has anyone experienced this before?!.. If not, how can I best go about getting the blower out and giving it a good clean and lube up?.. or is it best left well alone..

Second annoying noise is the snake in the dashboard. It sounds a bit like air escaping, but its inconsistent and only a little bit, just a bit concerned as to what it might be.. wondered if it was the headlight adjuster switch as the adjustment seems to be vacuum based, but setting of the switch doesnt seem to make any difference.. is there a vacuum or air-pressure connection to one of the dials in the dash, or am I imagining the whole menagerie [:D]

ps.. the rest of the car is soooo good that Im picking up on these minor things, which cant be a bad thing [;)]

A blind rabbit and a blind snake bumped into each other in the forrest.
The rabbit said "Can you help me I am blind and don't know what sort of animal I am".
"Of course I can" said the snake "and then perhaps you could let me know what I am, as I am also blind".
"Well, fluffy tail, smooth fur, long tall ears" said the snake.

"Wow. I'm a rabbit."
"OK, you have slimey, slippery skin, a long forked tongue and pointed teeth".

The snake thought for a few moments.
"Oh!" said the snake. "I'm a solicitor".[:D]

(substitute an other profession if you are a solicitor)

As for the rattles, I have those too !!

Ben,

The squeak from the fans (there are 2) is very common. It's a consequence of the bearing drying out and a general lack of use more than anything. Sometimes, if you're lucky, the noise will just go away if you can stand to run the fans for a while. Incidentally, you can still hear the squeak when the fans are turned off - because the fans doesn't turn off when set to 0!!! The only real solution is to replace the fans - I don't think the bearings can be lubricated - but it's a real pain to do.

Your diagnosis of the "hiss" sounds about right. AFAIK the headlamp adjustment is the only vaccuum-based object under the dash.

Regards

Dave

I had a feeling it might be a bugger to do!.. As for the hiss, we have a "listener" at work for finding leaks in hydraulics (fill the system with compressed air before putting oil in and it listens for high frequencies) which I might steal for an hour...

Noticed this morning that it mostly happens at low engine revs when you put your foot down a bit, ie when the traffic slows down a bit and your revs fall below 2k, then you just tickle the throttle from there to get back upto 30/40/whatever... Im thinking its probably the headlight adjuster thats causing it, but Ill have a fiddle and check

had a fiddle with the listener this afternoon and apparently the snake has crawled into the heater unit and eaten the cricket.. I can hear both but they are coming from the same place; I think the snake is the noise from the heater when its going slowly and the cricket is when its stopped and the fan is just oscillating.. [:D]
