Cruise Control jamming ON

Last week while in France I had my cruise control jam ON at 130kph. This could have been quite dangerous. There was no way to disengage, changing down resulted in revs going to limiter, braking to disengage did not work, and using the control lever would not release it. After stopping engine at a Peage, I removed the relevant fuse but again no change. After a number of difficult miles on normal roads, controlling speed with gears and brakes, it gradually released. I suspect the problem is mechanical, cable or motor. I wondered if anyone else has experienced this or knows of a re-call??
Also if you have this option you may also want to get it checked. JZ are investigating next week.

Never heard of this before on a 993, worst nightmare time I would think.

How did it "gradually release" though, mine is either on or off? I presume you haven't tried it since to see if the fault is still there?

JZ's findings wouldbe interesting.

S*d that. I don't think I'd be "trying it since to see if the fault is till there" unless I was certain it was fixed[&:]

It did gradually release, first so it would run at 4000rpm (tickover!!) and then after some more miles it would tick over but keep blipping up to around 2000rpm and then finally back to normal. Prior to this I used regularly when I lived in US and less often in UK with no problems.
I have no intention of just trying again to see what happens, but will wait to see what JZ find. I also intend to report to Porsche as this is a potentially dangerous problem.

JZ traced problem to a seized ball joint in the linkage between the control and the throttle. Dismantled the control unit and all OK. You have to take off the air intake manifold to get at unit that is bolted to crankcase. Minor problem and very unusual according to JZ. All ok now. They didn't think using it more would have made much difference.

Thanks for the update Chris.

Bit disconcerting that JZ didn't think that using it more would have made much difference. It means that mine could seize at any time [&o]

Hi Chris and Ann . Glad to here this has all been fixed - just remind us if we go on tour again not to ask you to follow us!

HI Chris - and also John
Nice to see that all is well with the car and that the JZ bill shouldn't be too excessive. I know at the time it was very worrying for you - we were together if you recall and you pulled over just after the toll booth. At the time I think we all thought it must be mechanical.
Have sent about 350 pics from the tour to Johnny - but I think I will make up aCD to send out to all on the tour so they can use any they wish.
Cheers,
Peter
PS Ordered the sports exhaust to be fitted at the service next month!! I couldn't resist after hearin Johnny's!

There was a suggestion that those who wished to meet do so at Club office in December - are either of you going?
If so Ill splash out on a Crimbo Card plus bring your CD of photos with me.

John
