Cruise control problem

My 2000 Boxster S has a problem with the cruise control. It started when I noticed that when I switched it on the green light failed to appear and there was no cruise control. This was a few days ago. But today I went out and did some errands and at one stage I found it would work as normal. But later the fault returned.

Any ideas on what might be wrong would be appreciated.

Sounds like a bad connection somewhere, or it might possibly be the small switch on the tip of the cruise lever is a bit dodgy. You could also try pulling out fuse B7 and putting it back in.

Cruise is deactivated by the brake pedal switch , are you sure there isn't a problem with the brake pedal switch ?

Cruise deactivation is indeed by switches on brake and clutch pedal - but these do not extinguish the green indicator light.
The green light indicates that power has been supplied to the cruise system- therefore there is an issue with power to the system rather than a cruise fault.

The fact it sometimes works suggests its the miroswitch at the end of the control stalk.
If you remove the cap on the stalk you will have access to the micro switch - simply bridge the two connections and see if the light illuminates - if it does then replace the microswitch - not sure if you can purchase seperately but alternativly you could wire in another switch elsewhere and route the cables to it.
If this fails to work bridged then you need to trace back the cables to discover where the fault is

I had my local Porsche centre have a look at the problem when it went in for a service and MOT. It turns out that the bulb which illuminates the green light to tell if the Cruise Control is on was faulty. Apparently if the bulb is not lit the system senses a fault and refuses to operate. It cost me 30mins labour plus the cost of a bulb!
