Cruise control retrofit £399 all in OPC offer

So I called my OPC (Silverstone) today to ask about a major service on my 997.1 C4S [:(], whilst on the 'phone I also asked about retrofitting Cruise.

Seems Porsche have reduced the parts to cost, which I understand to be the switch, a short cable and the cowling under the steering wheel hence the offer.

What do you all reckon? Good deal? I miss the cruise option especially with the ever increasing amounts of average speed cameras in use.

***Addendum!***

Priced up the parts from Pelican parts in the US:

OEM-99755247503A03 Genuine Porsche Part: STEER.COLUMN COV.
- This is a special-order OEM part and is non-returnable except for warranty replacement.
[More Info] $65.75 $65.75 £43.54

OEM-99762267400 Genuine Porsche Part: CABLE LOOM
- This is a special-order OEM part and is non-returnable except for warranty replacement.
[More Info] $37.75 $37.75 £25.00

OEM-9976132610001C Genuine Porsche Part: CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH
- This is a special-order OEM part and is non-returnable except for warranty replacement.
[More Info] $98.75 $98.75 £65.40

Total parts price £133.34 + shipping. Hmmm. fitting the switch, loom and cover is pretty simple so thats one hell of a charge to code the car.

Sounds like a good deal. My OPC quoted me about £500 when I asked them last year. Wrightune, an indepenedent Porsche specialist, will do it for £335 plus VAT but that is no longer materaially cheaper than the OPC.

I was recently emailed a brochure from an OPC and they were offering the cruise at a reasonable cost...
Its one of my first ticks in the option boxes, so would go for it..

Looking at the costs, I'd go for it as if there's an issue - for what ever reason [&:] then its not my problem...

That's a good deal - 100 quid off what I paid for it last year after noting it was the only thing not on my car that I consider an essential option in these SPECS camera-equipped times[]

It's exactly the same as the factory fit option - go for it!

I agree that cruise is an essential option these days. I frequently drive into London on the M40 and the limit drops to 50 with 4 speed cameras, then to 40 with two more. It's just not worth the bother so I just set the cruise control and relax.

I once asked Porsche to retrofit to a 996, they said it was "impossible", couldn't be a...d more like.

Seems clear the 997 has cruise built in to every car, you just need a switch (and car programming) to activate it. Well worth it at these prices.

Ah but, what about the light on the speedometer. That's not there in every car is it?

yep, the indicator is in every 997 dash, its also in the 996's with E-Gas if memory serves. Once Porsche moved to fly by wire throttles cruise became a very simple option.

The light in the instrument cluster can be enabled as part of the installation process.

Going back the the 996 .... it is possible as you are probably aware. I have done the retrofit to both a 996 and indeed my 986. The major problem is Porsche do not sell just the 'Cruise' switch on its own you have to get a new stalk or get one from a scrap yard etc.

The install process is well covered elsewhere.

Back to the 997 if you get the parts the install is quite straight forward but you still need to code the car.

Normally this involves a visit to an OPC.

However, those near London are welcome to drop by and I will gladly do this for them ..... for free.

Nick,

That sounds like an offer not to miss! What are you using to code the car? Durametric?

When I was in the market for a 996 turbo, I contacted the Porsche dealer in Zuffenhausen and, with the usual can-do attitude, told me it was no problem. UK dealers wouldn't touch it. In the end, I went with a car with the option installed. For 997 and prospective owners, I'd say it's an option well worth having.
