Cruise Control Retrofit

Anyone know if it is possible to retrofit cruise control to a 996 turbo? Seen a car which is well specc'd apart from this which I find useful in keeping to the speed limit along a camera infested 40 limit for example.

For road use, cruise is a very useful option - once you become familiar with it. But it's not a 'speed limiter' as F1 drivers have in the pit lane, so not easy to use in typical 30 - 40 mph zones.

Unfortunately, I don't think it can be economically retro-fitted on a 2003 996, unless the provision was left in the electrical system, which is now increasingly dependent on fibre optics.

Back in 1988 I had a 944 turbo, and I was doing quite a lot of motorway mileage, and had the OE Tempostat system retro-fitted by my OPC, and it cost over £800 then.

I doubt cruise control would work well at such low speeds.

Much better to reply on the speed limiter warning that's part of the BC.

Or buy yourself a road angel or other GPS detector and have it chime when you're close to a camera. will be much cheaper than cruise control. Incidentally my local woolies now sells a GPS camera detector for £70!

Actually, it works perfectly well, even down to 30 mph. I have it in my 996 C4S and find it useful flogging round the North Circular or those bits of SW London where there are so many cameras like the A30.

It's only £200 - £300 as an option, so cannot be much. A control unit, an extra column stalk, some wiring, a switch on the brake and clutch pedals and the light on the speedo. I daresay there's more to it than that, but the salesman told me it was a no-no.

I agree, CC on my GT3 (yes) works perfectly, even down hill, so if you can, retrofit it.

Tool Pants is right. It is a (relatively) simple process to retrofit cruise (and the OBC) to 996's with fly-by-wire throttle. The Motronic DME has all the software already available, and it just needs connecting up, and activating with the PST2. If you approach an OPC they will probably tell you it isn't possible, but believe me - it is. I know an independent who can do it if you don't fancy tackling it yourself.

Here's to Toolpants ! Let's drink to him and all his ilk - splendid fellow that he is ! Were it not for his knowledge and skills, I'd have gotten rid of my 996 altogether ; as it is, all I have done is sweeten "'er Indoors" up by giving it to to her. At least it is still in the family !

Aplogies, gentlemen and readers, but I am merily pissed, for tomorrow I start a 3 week holiday in my Tuscan farmhouse--------propelled there by our 996 Cab !

I was at the same independent as Richard as it was my car they were discussing (albeit a C4 not a Turbo). I'm sure if you ask nicely... Sadly, the 996 turbo I had my eye on has been snapped from under my feet. Never mind, there's always another car out there. Thanks for your responses.

And so there was (another car out there), picking it up today. [:)]

Porsche GB were adamant it couldn't done, more like they couldn't be arsed. Contacted the service place next to the factory and they've come back saying no problem, just need your VIN no; they didn't say how much it cost though. Have heard this before, taking the car "back to base" makes the average OPC look a bit amateurish. Just the job if you are visiting the factory or heading south for the hols.

A Chirf Inspecter from the MET I met skiing suggested the best cruise control on the market was 9 points on your licence.
Bit of a wag, drove a Prius, say no more.
