Ctek Battery Charger Dilemma

Hey Guys

I go away to Australia for 6 weeks on Thursday and have a bit of a dilemma - I bought a CTEK 3600XS battery charger for my car with the intention of leaving it on the car whilst I was gone.

The problem I have is the charger does not go to maintenance mode after over 3 days on charge which indicates a fault somewhere. I thought it was the charger so I had it replaced but it still doesn't go to full charge mode. I have tested the charger on a different car and it does go to maintenance mode OK. My cars battery is also fine and does not have any problems starting, although if I do not drive the car for about 5 days it does start a little weak.

My dilemma is do I leave the charger on the car and risk an overcharging situation where I could damage the battery or conditioner, or do I just fully charge the battery before I go and hope it is not dead and buried when I get back?

Cheers in advance for any advice.

May not be the answer but have you checked the electrolyte level in the battery recently? I have to add about 100ml of deionised water to each cell annually.

If you're not using the vehicle everyday, it may take more than a week for the charger to transfer to maintenance mode. Sometimes, due to drain from all the onboard electronic systems, it may never reach that level.

Connect it up and don't worry - it can't overcharge.

Regards,

Clive

My charger can sometimes take 7 days or so to go to maintenence mode when first connected to my battery. Connect it up and leave it on. Should be fine.

cheers for the advice guys, I will go with your suggestions and hook it up before I go. I do worry about the brake discs tho as the car will be parked outside for 6 weeks so I imagine they will be pretty rusty when I get back - will some hard sharp brake actions be enough to clear them up after 6 weeks of non use?

They'll be fine.

Put some plastic bags over the wheels if you wish. This may help - then again it could retain moisture. [8|]

Can't you find someone who'll rent you a lock-up garage for a few weeks?

Regards,

Clive
