ctek extension leads

set up my 2nd ctek (love them) from my 996 which is on the drive. I have the 2.5m extension lead on and can get it out of the garage and connected (just about). Would it be ok to buy a 2nd extension of 2.5m to give plenty of play in the cable connection or might there be a limit on extending away from the charger unit?

i got some water proof auto connectors and some 8amp cable and soldered up a 7m extension which goes under the garage door under the gravel on the drive and up into the car via the hole in the door rubber. I can change the end of the of the extension to whatever ctek connector i need, curently it has the ciggy lighter end charging in the car. Works great!

Hi

I think you would need to speak to the manufacturers for an answer to that question.

I would say that a cable carrying low voltage (12V) is much more sensitive to length than one carrying high voltage. Going back to my school physics - Heat generated in the cable (and therefore power lost) is proportional to the square of the current, times the resistance. In a low voltage system current is much higher, as you increase the length of the cable you will increase the resistance. I don't suppose the cable will be carrying a lot of current it you are trickle charging, however it might be different if the battery is low.

I suggest you would be better off putting the ctek in the car and using a standard 240V power extension cable - cheaper too.

Does anything about solar trickle chargers? I live in London and do not had a garage so have been trying to research a solar charger but have not been able to get much information on the subject. I have a 2002 996. Thanks

Hi Simon. I used to use a solar paneled to trickle charge my previous car. Did a fairly decent job. I had an A3 size panel and a small module that would regulate the power at a constant 12 v (from memory). Once charged it would then switch to trickle charge mode like cteck. I bought the lot from Amazon for about £45. If you need any further details please let me know. Hope that helps. John.
