CTEK MXS 5 - Only achieving four lights on the 8 step programme

Hi Guys

Thanks for reading my post guys

First let me apologise if this is a silly question, I invested in a new battery which was installed on the car on Monday the 30th of March 2020 as im keen to keep the battery in tip top condition, I have a CTEK charger / maintainer.

Which I installed today, after some 7 hours I have only achieved 4 lights on the 8 step programme?.......would this be right?....or is the so called new battery faulty??

Hi Nick, I would suggest that the charger is still doing it's job of checking the state of the new battery, I just copied the following from the online manual and I would guess that step 4 could take at least 7 hours for a new battery, don't think there is anything to worry about at the moment, if it was me I would leave it overnight and see what the light display situation is tomorrow.

I managed to bring a 120Ah battery back from the dead and it was on step 4 for about a week ..

STEP 1 DESULPHATION Detects sulphated batteries. Pulsing current and voltage, removes sulphate from the lead plates of the battery restoring the battery capacity.

STEP 2 SOFT START Tests if the battery can accept charge. This step prevents that charging proceeds with a defect battery.

STEP 3 BULK Charging with maximum current until approximately 80% battery capacity.

STEP 4 ABSORPTION Charging with declining current to maximize up to 100% battery capacity.

STEP 5 ANALYSE Tests if the battery can hold charge. Batteries that can not hold charge may need to be replaced.

Just to mention that it's perfectly safe to leave the CTEK permanently connected if you can. It's a battery conditioner not a battery charger, so won't do any harm.

I've had my ancient CTEK connected-up to my Cayman for more than 9-years.!

Hi Nick,

The first time I connected my CTEK MXS 5.0 to my Cayman battery it took forever and like you I thought there was a fault with either the charger or the battery. One of my other charges is an Optimate 2, I have this hooked up to my Boxster. I do a lot of short runs and hook my conditioner/charger up most nights to keep the battery topped up and ready.

I am experiencing the same issue. Hooked up the battery yesterday evening only to find it still on light 4 this morning. I will also give it a couple more days to see if there is any change.
