CTEK3600 direct connection to battery

I want to connect my CTEK3600 directly to the battery terminals using the supplied lead, but this involves disconnecting the battery leads. What problems am I likely to encounter when reconnecting the battery after attaching the CTEK leads? I have tried using a the cigarette lighter socket option but this involves the cable exiting the car just where the family walk past the car in the garage and I am worried about them tripping over it and ........ It's a MY2009 Boxster S by the way.

You don't need to disconnect the battery leads. Just follow the instructions that come with the CTEK charger under "Charging batteries mounted in a vehicle".

I think he means the leads with the eyelets that comes with the charger- so you lan leave the lead permantly attatched.

I just loosened the nut/bolt on the terminal clamp, and removed the nut and washer- leaving the terminal clamp connected, put the ring connector on, then washer and nut. Job done.

See here for access to the connector without having to remove the cover every time:

Buy the cigarette lighter attachment (it is about £9) if I remember correctly - this then plugs into the 12V lighter socket in the passenger footwell. For example: CTEK lighter socket This way you'll not need to mess about under the bonnet every time you connect / disconnect the charger"¦ plenty of room for the wire to be fed out through the gap between door and wing. This is how I've connected my 3600 - simples!

Thanks for the information; it is the crimped-on eyelet connectiom to the battery terminal lugs option I prefer and I will try to connect them without removing the lugs from the battery posts and hopefully keep the cars electrics going during the process. Whilst I appreciate the cigarette lighter socket is a quick solution, I have a fairly small garage. The only door accessible, with the car in it, which would allow the charger cable to exit the car also means that it is likely to be snagged by passing family! This, as you must acknowledge, might lead to the use of profane language; hence my preferment of the direct connection option.

Thanks

Geoff

You could drill a small hole into the tops of each of the battery's terminal posts and screw the eyelets on using self-tappers. If you intend to always leave it in place, you wouldn't need to worry about the thread going. Just make sure they're the smallest holes - and screws - you can get away with.

I still think you should install an inline fuse between the battery terminal and the C-Tek lead, in case the wire snags etc, it could cause a shorting and worse fire. I am very surprised C-Tek do not supply it fitted. I have installed an in line waterproof fuse (from Maplins) .

Thanks for the information regarding fitting of an inline fuse; I'll do the same as a fire does not bear thinking about.
