Cup mirrors

Hi

I need a bit of help with my secondhand cup mirrors I need to get them painted guards red. Does anyone know how to dismantle them so I can send all the individual parts to the paint shop. I read somewhere about removing the glass by inserting screwdriver in hole underneath the mirror is this right?. Also how do the bases come off without damaging them?. Also i am going to fit 18 inch alloys to my 964 with 265/35/18 and 225/35/18 tyres what would the offset need to be to clear oil lines etc in drivers side wheel arch.

Thanks

Tim

Tim,

You're right about the glass. There is a rotating retainer which holds the glass in place. Rotate it with a flat bladed screwdriver and the glass will pop out. The bases are another story. There is a bolt which goes up through the base and holds the whole thing together with (I believe) a nut inside the housing.

Although it's not something I've had to do, I've heard lots of stories about the difficulties of getting it all back together after painting without scratching the new paint.

On the wheel front (actually - rear) you didn't mention what width wheels you plan to fit although I can probably assume you are talking 10's on the rear. The 18" Mille Miglia wheels designed for the 964 narrow body have an offset of 47 - so I'd aim for around that figure. The fronts are likely to be 8J or 8.5J and an offset of around 52 is fine there.

Hope that helps.

Dave

Thanks Dave,

I will look into them further. With regards to my wheels they are et56 and are way too close to the oil pipe in my opinion. I was going to fit 7mm spacers do you think these are ok?? Also if I fit lowering springs will they rub? they are 10x18 and 8x18. Also what are the part numbers for the bases (Just to confirm they are rhd ones!)

Tim,

I agree about the wheels. Even a 7mm spacer will only reduce the offset to 49 - I'd be inclined to go a little more but 15mm spacers are a lot more money that 7mm shims. Watch the stud length if you're using shims.

Regarding the mirror mounts, the LHS (Passenger) is 965.731.241.01 and the RHS (Driver) is 965.731.242.00. These part numbers are for the RH drive cars. For comparison, the LHD mirror bases are 965.731.241.00 (L) and 965.731.242.01 (R). I have to say, this DOES look a little strange - you'd expect the LHD parts to be 00 and the RHD to be 01 - but what I've quoted is straight out of PET.

Rob

Can you give me a link to the cup mirror install guide. I couldnt find it on porche964.co.uk???

thanks
Tim

Tim,

I can't find anything on John's site either although I'm sure there used to be a link to Phil Raby's write up. I DID find another link on Rennlist which, although it relates to a 968, the mirrors are the same and it goes into much more detail about dismantleing the mirrors than Phil's did. You can find it here: http://www.951motorsports.com/
