Cup Vs Super Cup?

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if someone , more knowledgeable than I on matters racing, could let me know the technical differences, if any, between 993 Cup and 993 Super Cup cars.

Many thanks

Johnny

Actually, not to worry, as I think I've found my answer. A bit of research brought up this quote from Steve Rance....

"The 996 GT3 Carrera cup series was the first series where both national and Super cup championships shared the same essential base car. With the 993, the Supercup series ran cars which we now know as 'Cup' cars. The National Cup series in the UK was run by Porsche Club UK Motorsport to very strict regs meant to reduce running budgets compared to Supercup. It was supported by top teams and drivers at the time and subsiquently cars were still run with relatively high budgets. Cars were based on nearly new C2's (my car was about 6 months old as a road car when it was built up as a race car) and as you can imagine, building a race car from a nearly new road car was not an inexpensive excersise. Probably not a lot chaper than buying a Super Cup car."

If anyone else has anything to add, I'd be grateful for any more info.... numbers built etc....

Thanks

Dunno about the 93's, but my 964 Cup simply had additional door bracing added to compete in the Supercup!

Just a quick bit of research...a far as I can make out the Supercup for 993's started in 1994 as a European series with 310bhp 993 Cups with no aerodynamic package, with 964 Cups racing in Carrera Cup Germany, France and Japan

In 1995 Supercup was again an international series, with 993's contesting the Carrera Cup in Germany and France only. Difference appears to be the GT2 type rear wing and front spoiler and some suspension 'fine tuning'. And a shortened ratio for sixth gear.

I initially thought that the 1995 Cup cars were the 1994 MY cast offs but it states categorically that "..the Carrera Cups in Germany and France will have......the same car as used in the Porsche Supercup."

The 1996 car had another 5bhp but Supercup and Carrera Cup (now only in Germany) cars were identical....

I think what you quoted is for UK only.

HTH!!!

Thanks Melv, that helps explain it.

One more question....

On reading Steve Rance's posts with his RHD CS/Cup rebuild, IIRC, he says that his is a non varioram 3.8. Was this the case with all cup/super cup cars, or were the later cars fitted with the 993RS , varioram 3.8?

Again, thanks for all help [:D]

No varioram , weighs too much but there is a resonance flap that opens at high revs ............soem have /had them wired full open all the time

TBH the car is on the cover in 1 st race livery ........i even have the art designer sketches .................orininally born Riviera Blue but on cover more of a dark blue with kinda yellow flame flashes ...................in the book theres a picture of driver with his small daughter standing on the sill and u can see the interior is Riviera /cage etc

Thes books are still around and not a lot of dough if ur doing research etc

Anorak off........................................

On average around 90 to 100 cars per season, dependant on year and demand.
Supercup cars would support all the European f1 races,my old supercup had ralf schumy as a driver.
94 season was with only the raised rear spoiler, most got updated for the following season, they were built until the end of 97/98 year,of which 22 were built into rsr.

Mine is the '97 supercup VIP nr 1 (see my avatar) with a number of famous drivers.

Great track cars these 993 cups.
