i am toying with the idea of fitting a custom chip to my lux and i was wondering what the general opinion was, does anyone have one they want to sell

You cant fit a 'custom chip' to your car. With the exception of a very few very late models (MY'85), the series one uses a more expensive metal cased ECU that uses a surface mounted chip. Series two cars used a cheaper ECU that has a removable chip: only thse can be fitted with a replacement, which will be of spurious value. It is possible to fit a later ECU along with the appropriate airflow meter and injectors/pressure regulator (these are usually overlooked but they work on a different voltage and at a different pressure) and fit one into this, but I dont thtink that its worth it.

*eta: all series one cars use the more expensive metal cased ECU, but the ones Ive mentioned are different inside with a removable IC*

Heath Robinson style surface mounting would be possible if a little awkward, surface mounting works by applying solder paste through a metal stencil and, after correct component positioning, using hot air to liquify the paste and make the connections. Personally i'd buzz off giving it a go but after a quick reality check 944man's advice is a lot sounder!
