Hi all,
I'm relatively new here and new to the 944. I've been lurking and soaking up as much information as possible partly due to the excitement of recently getting the car and also because I half expected an issue at some point. The car was bought off of an enthusiast (aren't they all?) who seems to have kept the car in good condition. We dropped it off at RGA Porsche in Vauxhall for a full service and ended up spending a couple of grand to get a number of issues looked at on top of the service. Bob there was shocked at some apparent hammer marks on the cam belt tensioners and a cam belt cover that fell to bits when removed... Anyhow... Besides that he said it was in good condition.
The other day the car let my wife down and stranded her out in the sticks (£200 recovery charge, thanks!). The engine keeps cutting out. The engine just dies. The rest of the electrics are fine. Two RAC men couldn't identify the issue but felt confident it was an ignition amplifier issue. As far as I can deduce, my 1986 2.5L 8v doesn't have one, that function is managed by the DME.
Doing some research it seems the first place to start was to replace the DME Relay. I've done that tonight and it's still cutting out. It did it when I was revving as well, so I don't think it's an idle issue, it's just like someone killed the power (though everything else stays on just fine). I've also checked the earth mount on the bulkhead. That seems secure. Spark plugs and distributor cap have been replaced as part of the service too.
Other threads on here that seem to be related are a bit daunting as they go into a ton of things to check, but I wanted to see if anyone had any simple ideas off the top of their head as to what the issue might be, or what to check?
I'm waiting on some quotes to get the car taken back to RGA but would rather not go to that expense if I could identify the issue as something straight forward I could remedy.
Thanks!
