It seems my offside outer CV boot is split and needs replacing asap. Anyone done this at home, it seems simple enough, but undoing the hub nut and using the factory boot clips looks like the tricky part. I don't have a lot of room to get the car in the air (just on the drive) so was thinking of having Francis Tuthills do it to save the bother of not being able to undo the hub. Also I guess you have to undo the gearbox end too?
 
You simply remove all the allen bolts from inside near the axle shaft, you don't mess with the hub. Then you can simply remove the whole shaft assy from under the car.
You then remove the circlip and slide off the CV joint you need too. Replace the boot and reassemble torquing up correctly. Simple.

All I think you need is a 8mm allen tool, torque wrench and a good strong pair of circlip pliers, not forgetting the new boot, 2 gaskets and grease. No clips or anything like that needed. The boot is already fitted/adhered/pressed onto its flange which mates to your exsisting CV joint. A boot kit comes with grease and one gasket IIRC.

It is much easier if you can turn the wheels on the car while you work. Get the car in the air with axle stands placed under the torsion bar covers on the outer of the car. You may feel safer lifting the front onto axle stands placed under the front torsion bars too. I place some steel wheels under the front wheels too to prevent the car being able to move backwards or forwards. Place another axle stand under the crankcase of the engine, tranny or ARB for extra safety.
 
But the later cars axle doesn't bolt up to the outer stub axle, it's all integral so the hub nut has to come off to withdraw the axle assembly. Only the inner gearbox end is bolted like that otherwise I would be doing it myself. Sorry, should have put my car is an 89[:D]

I have booked it in to have Francis Tuthills do it as I have chickened out of trying to undo it on my drive. Guess I'll be looking sorry when it comes undone with ease!
 
Yeah, It's a pain, and according to Tuthills, you can't actually buy just an outer boot from Porsche, they expect you to buy a whole axle! But they get them in from GKN who make them for Porsche and will cahnge just the boot.

If it was bolted either end it would have made a nice cheap afternoon job.[&:]

Only just picked up on this thread. I had a CV outer boot changed about 3 weeks ago. So far as I know BS Motorsport (between Aylesbury and Beicester) would have got it in from Eurocarparts. I know that I rang up on the Monday and Neil did the job on the Thursday. No drama.. Too far for you?
