CV joint boots and grease

I am just about to replace the CV joint boots on my '79 SC, which frankly have seen better days! Can anyone tell me what type of grease I should be packing the joint/boot out with, is there a recommended brand?

Also just for safety, are there any pooh traps involved in the job? It appears very simple, but you never know!

Thanks again
Regards
Ian

I may have just answered part of my query by checking what Pelican Parts sell. They hold Swepco and Lubromoly, any other recommendations or anyone know where to buy the above in UK? Also please do not forget the pooh traps.

Thanks

Ian

You need MsO2 CV joint grease.Molybdenum Disulphide I think! It is black in colour.Comma CV joint grease is perfectly acceptable. If it is good enough for a front wheel drive CV on a 220 brake Saab turbo it will be OK in a 911!

Thank you Steve, I'll give it a try. Any recommendation on where to buy the boots/clamps, OE or pattern?

Ian

Get yourself a set of allen keys that fit to your socket set with long shafts, I got all but two undone before becoming stuck!!!!

Thanks Rattys,
Where did you buy your parts from, did you go the OE route or go for pattern parts?

Thanks again

Ian,
I got mine from www.gsfcarparts.com they are OM not OEM. £16 + VAT pounds each for the boots and £45 pounds for the CV joint. I think I got the grease with the kit but I cannot remember if it was with the boots or joints. At the time they were selling a splined socket set for £6 check out their web site as they have lots of offices everywhere, if you are not close to you then their mail order service is good.
The Porscheshop have them at the same price and Paul would probally throw in the grease free.

I received my CV boot kits from GSF, they were a mix of GKN and Lobro so no quality issues. What did surprise was that there was no clamp to seal the small end of the boot to the driveshaft. I phoned GSF and they checked their stock to confirm that no CV boot kits come with these clamps now. They suggested cable/zip ties or jubilee clamps, not sure that this was what I really wanted to fit! After checking with a motor factors it would appear that Vauxhall do a suitable clamp, which I subsequently purchased at £1.18 for 4. The other suggestion was Renault, who do a nice stainless clamp for some of their water systems. Interesting.

I have always used cable ties, they work really easy and I have stack of them in my tool box

Thanks again Mark,
I think that I not sure that the cable ties would clamp equally all the way around and therefore not seal properly? Any experience to the contrary over a protracted period?

Ian

So many projects, so little time.

Ian Mark's right. Cable ties are a common solution to the problem of boots loosening and loosing their contents, they work well.

Sounds like a majority decision for the cable ties! I think that the main objection was that they were not originally fitted, Porsche still don't use them and they possibly don't clamp evenly all the way around. Having said that most people seem to recommend them, any longevity issues?
