Cycle carrier Boxster

Hi all,
I am looking for anyone who has experienced the Bird bike carrier www.birdautomotive.com.
The idea looks great but they want $450!
Which for what is simply a few bits of alloy and steel tubing welded together, is in my opinion way over priced.
If it was $250 then it would be nearer the mark.
Anyway has anyone in the UK got one and if so any good? ESp if fitted on a 981 .
I might be interested in a 2nd hand one if the thoughts are that they are any good
My other answer is I will fabricate my own. Having priced materials @ £40 and I know a highly skilled multi-metal welder who for £20 and a good bottle of wine will do the hard work :)

So any ideas comments would be great.
