DAB aerials

I have a Blaupunkt Woodstock, which requires a seperate aerial for the DAB frequencies. There are a few options available - exterior & glass-mounted interior, etc. However they are all a) quite expensive, and b) a great advert for what's inside the car. In my searches I have come across an adapter lead which enables you to plug the conventional aerial lead into both sockets on the set (ie, DAB & FM) simultaneously. It sounds too good to be true - and such things usually are - but has anybody tried this on a 44? (S2) Does it work?

Can't help, but bear in mind that the S2 has an aeriel amplifier (somewhere in the passenger footwell, I think, although I have never seen it) and this may not help your cause. Not sure how this would affect the DAB end of things.

My car has a DAB radio but I can't find the aerial anywhere so I didn't think they needed one but I'm not so sure now must be somewhere in the car

I had the same unit in my last 944, the internal foil-type stick on antenna worked fine..

When I was fitting my DAB head unit, I found this combined FM/DAB aerial - http://www.incarexpress.co.uk/view_product.php?partno=HAL2 but as I have a cabriolet, I couldn't mount it on the roof [;)], but I also found this which may be what you're thinking of: http://www.nexxia.co.uk/Car_Stereo_fitting_kits/antenna_adaptors.htm - follow the link, and it's the last item on the page - DAB Aerial Splitter, part number 06-536. Bit steep at £41.45 + postage, but it's tempting as it will keep the windscreen clear of the foil aerial supplied with most head units, which I ended up fitting. I don't know how it will behave with the Porsche antenna booster though.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

That's the adapter lead I found, but it's the booster that concerns me - I was hoping to find someone who's BTDT.

I emailed nexxia (Technical at nexxia dot co dot uk ) who said that they would accept it back if it didn't work, but they're double the cost of the one from lowcostcaraudio.co.uk. I rang lowcostcaraudio.co.uk and they were pretty confident it would work.

I'm tempted to take a chance on it.

Well, the splitter arrived on Tuesday (bought it from LowCostCarAudio) and took about 3 minutes to fit! I turned the radio on, and the FM came through perfectly. DAB - Absolutely nothing. [:(]

I've sent it back to LowCostCarAudio and they're going to check it to see if there is a fault - hopefully there is then I can have another go.

Watch this space!

George,

I know this isn't going to help you, but I dug out an old Shamen CD last night, and playe it damned loud to and from work today, and it sounded excellent.

There's more to life than DAB. I can lend you the CD if you want ...

The Shamen? Haha "¦ good shout.

I fitted new front speakers in my Turbo last night and gave them a thorough testing with an old Pop Will Eat Itself CD.

The Shamen? PWEI? (Saw them in 1991) - I think I'll stick with my Pink Floyd.

I find DAB is very sensitive to aerial if you're in the wrong location (M4 for example is bad).

That said I have had it for 6+ years across 3 944s and several other cars. Internal aerials are rubbish in my experience - the one that Revo supply is useless, the Sony one I had inside the window of my 964 equally so. The amplified internal one I had in my 530d was better but still not good.

I have used Blaupunkt glass mount external versions with good effect but it was only after I lost the second one over the winter I remembered I hadn't sealed the base to the glass which then allowed water in which froze and prized the base off, so both are gone.

Also good is the roof mount type. You have to drill the roof but they fit a coupe where the 968 has its bee sting and look fine. I had one on the boot of my cab and it looked fine also.

DAB is so signal sensitive that I'm not surprised an FM antenna split is useless and I bet the combined ones are not great either, though I haven't tried one.

Basically you need an external mast in my experience though the Blaupunkt amplified stick on internal one I have is passably good.

There may be more to life than DAB Oli, but CD? How quaint! [:D]
