DAB upgrades

Hi all,

Am a born-again boxster owner - had 2 986's (long time ago) before, and just got a 987.2 - and am absolutely loving it! (technically it's the wife's car but she lets me use it sometimes :)

anyway, got a few little things to sort out with it which are in progress, and one thing that I was wondering about is the PCM 3.0.

It's got PCM 3.0 which has no jukebox and no DAB - and I was wondering if Porsche or anyone else is doing a 3.1/DAB upgrade to PCM 3.0 cars? If not, would it maybe be worth the club asking Porsche for such a thing? Or has that been tried?
Minor thing, but significant nonetheless - maybe something Porsche could give some thought to generally - retrofit of PCM 3.1+DAB into PCM 3.0 cars say? What do you guys think?

regards

richard

Sounds a nice thing to do but suspect that cost would be prohibitive. The wife has a 987.2 boxster and an upgrade to DAB, satnav etc would be very nice, whilst I would like to keep original equipment I fear the only cost effective solution is go outside the Porsche world of PCM

fair comment - but am not so sure it really "must" be cost prohibitive - satnav is there, antennas are there, so really it's just a PCM device swap, with a trade-in of the old device for parts recycling (say like apple do). Am under warranty and don't want third-party stuff as it will void that, and quite like PCM 3.1 in my 991 anyway - so having the same would be ok with me. Even if it were a non-trivial cost to swap.
Technically, I think it's entirely do-able - the question is does porsche want to do it, or do we have enough interest to press it collectively?

p.s. upgrading to a 981/718 isn't an option for me, as it's my wifes car and she's quite small, so doesn't fit the newer models as they're so much bigger.

now that's the thing! question is will it void my porsche warranty...
Good news is this proves it's technically do-able - so is there a way of getting this done without voiding warranty?

Richard,

Forget it if you're under the Porsche extended warranty, even if in the very unlikley event somehow you found a way of adapting a later PCM.

Anything non-standard is frowned upon - you can't even change the make of battery for Heaven's sake..!

I thought that would be the case, now why can't porsche just offer this? it's not as if they're going to sell loads more 718's because the owners of older ones will pay to get DAB is it, so what's the problem porsche? why not?

Yeah the retro fit options aren't great, PCM Repairs advertise that they can retrofit but actually all they do is replace the PCM with a Pioneer Carplay system and a £250 MOST interface and Double Din adapter and then charge a £1000 in labor to do that.

I have UMI on my PCM 3.0 so got the BOVEE 1000 with his an iPod to Bluetooth Adapter I can then run either RadioPlayer or Spotify from my iPhone and then change the track / radio station (if setup as a favourite) using the previous and next buttons on the PCM it also shows the track information etc on the PCM. Otherwise you can use other apps and just use it as a Bluetooth Aux. If you have an android phone I think it only does Bluetooth Aux, in which case there a cheaper options to just use the AUX port and USB Power.

Mine doesn't have a Porsche Warranty but if yours does then it is easy to then just unplug the UMI iPod lead before you go into the OPC.
