Daily driver vs. garage queen..

When I bought my 911 last year, I had every intention of using it at the weekends, etc. As a result I have three cars which is a little excessive, not to mention expensive!

I commute 10 miles each way every day and leave my 'station car' in a car park. having read plenty of threads in this regard, I'm wondering if I should ditch the station car and use the Porsche instead. How would two 10 mile 'bursts' each day compare to standing for a week or two at a time, in terms of wear and tear on the engine?

Is anyone else using doing this and what are your experiences?

Thanks,

Les.

Hi Les,

I tend to use my carrera 3.0 only for proper trips and that means for example a little circuit of 30 miles to my private surgery along a nice twisty road. The first 10 miles are 40 MPH speed limits to let the engine gently warm up and then I let her breath a bit.

I use the A606 from Nottingham to Melton in case anyone is familiar with that road. By the way that mostly doesnt mean break neck speeds -not only legal disclaimer- as the last 7 miles are using a B-raod. With my suspension set up I am hitting the roof with my head at 50 MPH. In my Golf I could take that road at 80 and feel not shaken and stirred.

I'm not too sure whether 10 miles is sufficient to warm up 13,5 liters of oil that is lingering in your sump...

An engine rebuild is, what £3,500 upwards these days so why not having a car which is not the super dooper latest commuter mobile but a cheap, neutral spacious and dare I say it, comfortable motor?

Alternatively, a 911 in combination with a 924 can represent surprising good value.

My 2 p worth.....

I use mine everyday for a 6 mile trip to work plus a few 25-100 mile business trips per week.

I'm sure that there are some adverse effects but none apparent yet and I firmly believe in these cars as practical everyday transport - it's what sets them apart from other supercars!

Having said that, for a station car I'd be more worried about all those careless muppets banging their doors into yours or walking past with metal briefcases etc. - not sure I'd sleep[:(]

My 3.2 was driven around London for 8 years before I got it, mostly in short journeys. Being in London the oil would have plenty of time to warm up in traffic jams.

When I got it, 72K on the clock, rings were worn, top of barrels worn, and after 20K miles it needed a rebuild. It drank about a litre of oil a week ( I drive 75miles a day on the motorway).

Since then it has only had motorway journeys, hardly burns any oil off and is about to clock 195K.

So the 72K short journey miles did far more damage than my 100K motorway miles.

If your weekend journeys are quite long, you might get away with short journeys. But I don't feel my car has warmed up properly for the first 20 miles and wouldn't do it.

I've left my 3.2 parked on the road for the last 7 years, half of which were in Central London, and with no vandalism (which I had expected to get). But I'm not sure I would leave it in a station car park every day.
