Dakota ... FAIL!

Set off to join you guys at the Dakota tonight, but it never happened. []

Joining the Kirkcaldy by-pass there is suddenly the most awful BANG, BANG, BANG noise. Rear tyre had picked up a big lump of debris and by the time it was safe to stop it had fallen off, not before scratching the arch [] and leaving me at the side of the dual carriageway with a rapidly deflating tyre. BUGGER!

The good news is that I can at least tell you that the Porsche tyre sealant kit and emergency pump do indeed work, and after a few stops to re-inflate, I limped the 10 miles or so home.

Maybe next month! [:(]

sorry to hear that John - am considering removing the space saver from my new steed to give more room in the boot - might reconsider......

I was looking forward to seeing the new turbo too (were you there?)

You don't half feel a twit limping home at 30 mph in an otherwise shiny Porsche, with OAPs passing you. []

You called [:D][:D] sorry to hear that John ,that is my one concern in driving the boxster is getting a puncture and using that junk stuff .Am I right in thinking that the tyre is now useless after you fill it with sealant Greig will have to come and see your new car but not in my new one would never get over the speed bumps at your place

Yeah, apparently the tyre cannot be repaired once it has ben "gunked", but I'm not sure I'd repair modern high performance tyres anyway. As it happens I was about to change the rear ones anyway (I had a set stashed) and just back from getting them changed over this morning. To be fair, using the gunk and compressor is probably easier and safer than trying to jack up a car and change a wheel at the side of the road anyway.

I've heard that said before, but a tyre specialist I spoke to once at a track day says its nonsense - the tyre can be repaired and used again, just that it has to have the gunk cleared out first, which is a time consuming job and it also makes it difficult to locate the puncture.

As for repairing modern tyres - there is no problem so long as its not near the sidewall and is repaired properly with the "mushroom" style plugs - I believe this leaves the area stronger than the original tyre. I repaired a set of track tyres on the GT3 and thrashed them until the thread showed with no issues - I'd happily do it again.

Yes, I was one of the brave 5 who showed up on Thursday.....

Interesting, I shall remember that for future reference. Mind you, cleaning the tyre would be no picnic.
