Damage to wing mirror - 12th May Talbot Hotel

As I was driving out of the car park, the large wood gate blew into the passenger wing mirror causing substantial damage requiring complete replacement. On playing back our dash cam I heard two or three people remarking they had seen the gate move. I would be grateful if any person who witnessed this could please get in touch either by calling 07767402273 or email jrh.eden@btinternet.com.

I reported the damage to the hotel and have been in contact with the Manager who appears to accept responsibility but is passing the matter on to their insurers. If the insurance company is not as forthcoming as the manager it would be useful to have support from a third party. I must state that the Manager contacted me very early on Monday morning by email and telephoned in the afternoon to discuss the incident and is assisting with our claim for replacement of the wing mirror.

Thank you

Such a shame this spoiled your day John, although we didn't see the incident the gates were moving to and fro as other cars were leaving.

We were parked by the hotel and we departed the same way as we arrived.

Hopefully the insurers will not mess around.

Best regards

Peter & Val

So sorry to hear this, unfortunately we did not see your incident, however when we were exiting by the gate I felt it’s operation was a little unreliable, it was open for a car in front of us to exit and as we were about to follow through we noticed the gate was starting to slowly close so we held back and it did close, the exit button had to be pressed again to open it before we ventured through.

I was following John out and saw the whole thing. I was worried the same would happen to me. In fact it looked like it closed on his car rather than blew! I have contacted John to give him my details.

Very sorry to hear about this problem spoiling your day John.

I can confirm that I was one of the last members to leave on Sunday and was parked in the upper section of the car park on the left hand side as you approach the exit. For some reason when I got to up to my car to go home the gates were closed but at the time when I arrived previously I am pretty sure they had been open.

After I started my car up I could see a couple of members were also ready to leave and were sat waiting in their cars but the car in front of them and actually pulled up at the gates was having a bit of difficulty getting out as they were closed and didn't seem to be opening.

At the time I remember thinking to myself 'why would anybody bother to close these gates in the middle of the afternoon when guests would need to be able to leave?'

So because of this difficulty I then decided to leave via the other gates nearest the hotel entrance but just as I was about to do this the gates where the problem had arisen were opened - just how they opened I am unable to say?

What the issue with them was - again I couldn't say but as far as I could see no members cars had been damaged at that point - as I pulled out onto the road the gates appeared to be fully open and remained so as I passed through them.

I hope this helps.

Regards.

Zeusy.

Thank you for all the information given especially from Nick.

i have today spoken again with the Manager and informed him of your comments regarding the erratic behaviour of their automatic gates on Sunday. He informed me that the gates are normally opened at 7 am and closed at night, no closure during the day should occur. The gates will remain in the open position until repaired.

On the bright side, a new replacement wing mirror part was ordered by Specialist Cars on Monday and is now in their spray shop, hopefully fitted later in the week.

Lets hope their insurers are as efficient in dealing with our claim.

Hi
Really sorry I have only just seen this post. I was leaving just behind you and saw the gates close into your car as you drove out. They clearly had a fault and tried to close again a number of other times. My partner stood guard as I left to prevent any similar incident.

Thanks for your help unfortunately the insurers and the hotel manager are still trying to get out of their liability.

Mirror unit required complete replacement involving removing door panel and was well done by Mick at Specialist Cars, Malton.
