Damper Recommendations

If you needed advice on replacement dampers for a Turbo, or a performance/track orientated car, then I would be full of suggestions, but I need to refresh an early ('86) series two car and I dont know where to start.

Between mismatched products (why make front and not rears, and vice versa?) and confused and obviously incorrect fitment lists from manufacturers, I dont know whether Im coming or going.

Id like four matched dampers: front complete struts, from someone Ive heard of, for a price that I can shrug off.

Any pointers with regards to model year differences appreciated too, as I have definitely forgotten more than I still know...

Not sure you have much of a choice available. I think the only thing that satisfies all your criteria is a set of Boge OE spec front struts and rear dampers.

But if I recall correctly someone on here bought some from Porsche not too long ago and discovered that they were manufactured years and years ago and then there was a debate about shelf life and whether or not it was acceptable for Porsche to be selling them as "new".

I've got a pair of new Sachs 312 311 front struts/shocks I no longer need, you can pick up new Sachs rears easily enough too, there's some on eBay for £49 each.

'86 front struts have threaded inserts, which means they are the perfect candidate for Bilstein B6 inserts.
I can't think of an option with a better performance/price ratio.

Thanks for the replies so far. I do have a set of B6s, but theyre for best. This is for an 86 automatic that I have bought. I want to freshen it up, but not go to town.

I put Koni on my S2 - regular strut inserts and rear shocks - left on full soft and they feel (to me) like the standard stuff would have when new - ride is pretty good but have the option to "firm things up". Having said that, assuming Psenior1's price is good you may be best staying standard.

I'd assumed mine weren't inserts on my 86 (but was wrong) so decided not to fit the Sachs and get Bilstein B6's at some point instead, hence the struts are for sale. I paid £120 for them, they are on eBay for £120 + postage, but I'd take £100 inc postage (48hr Parcelforce) if someone on here wanted them here on the forum. I've got new top mounts too, would want £35 for those...

Definitely tempted, and I think that I have seen them on eBay too. I cant make a decision until the weekend, as I am too tired to think.

I think KYB are available, I had a set on the rear of my 2.5 NA for a while, pretty good for the money

KYB were my first search Tony. Available but a very confused fitment list and mismatched products (gas fronts only etc).

I used to be familiar with FrontRunner suspension from 1976-1995, but Ive dropped the ball and I really need to find out whats what in order that I can interpret the fitment lists.
