Damper?

[FONT=arial"]I have a cylindrical black object in the right hand boot well of my 944S2 Cab (opposite the battery) which is mounted horizontally and longitudinally between two rubber bushes. I can only think it is supposed to provide some sort of damping effect, but I can find no mention of it in any manuals or parts lists. Can anyone suggest what its purpose may be? Do you have a picture? Sounds like something shoved in there as opposed to anything which is "fitted". [&:]

It's a vibration damper, from memory.

Is this a cab-specific part? I don't recall anything on our S2 matching this description? []

It's only in the cabs, presumably to dampen vibration from cutting the roof off.

There's a drawing of in in PET

'Tis indeed a vibration damper. Only on cabs.

I've never understood what it is meant to do, as it seems to be mounted with both ends on the same frame, but Porsche put it there for a reason.

Having said that, I have heard of people taking them out and saving the (not inconsiderable) weight and space.

Oli.

I tend to share Oli's view, but I assume there is something inside more than just solid steel or plastic or whatever it's made of. I didn't ever look all that closely at the one in my cab to investigate.

There was a while ago a HUGE debate on one of the USA forums [Rennlist i think], about this "object" + what it was there for...+ Yes it is CABRIO specific.

You've got to love the US forums. I use a couple of Jeep ones and they remind me of Rennlist; half the posters or more know absolutely nothing about anything, never mind the subject of the forum.. For example yesterday someone gained confidence from someone else posting a how-to on relocating your high level brake light. He hadn't done it before because he didn't know which wire "went in which hole" on the new light.
