dampness

Hi,

I have noticed that the carpet in the passenger foot well of C4S seems to be getting slightly damp close to the door and the front of the car. I wondered of anyone had come across this before?

Mike

I cant say I have in mine - it has sat out in the drive in the rain a few times... but spends the majority in the garage... maybe some blocked drainage holes in the front scuttle perhaps ..?

What condition is the door seal? I think others on here posted a while back that changing the door seal fixed that problem.

Have you checked under the rear carpet/floor liner? The other source of water (but it seems to arrive in the rear) is driving through deep water, which then gets into the cills immediately behind the front wheels. There seems to be nothing stopping water in the cills flowing into the cross member under the seats and then out to the rear footwell.

Good job our cars are zinc dipped!

Its turned out to be a dodgy replacement windscreen replacement with water leaking in around the screen. OPC Tonbridge have agreed to arrange for the screen to be taken out and refitted with the possible risk of it breaking whilst doing so.

Make sure they thoroughly treat any corrosion/damaged galvanised protection around windscreen aperture. This occurs in virtually all 993s (and earlier) due to the lack of a drain hole - bottom of windscreen aperture is a collecting point for water.

Ham-fisted removal of bonded screen with sharp tools can also do damage & start corrosion off.

Might save you ££ in future!

Good luck.

Unfortunately they found some corrosion around the screen and its going to be fairly expensive to put this right but at least it shouldn't need looking at again for a long time. I was a bit surprised to discover this as there were no outward signs of corrosion as far as I could tell anyway when I brought the car.

I had exactly this problem - front screen scuttle first and then the rear. When you see the first signs of paint bubbling, you are already in deep trouble. Scratch the surface (literally) and you'll see the extent of the rust is probably far worse than you'd imagined. It's cost me hundreds to fix. Worth it, though!

the windscreen cost me about £1000 in he end but as you say well worth it. No problems as yet with the rear screens. Shall be keeping the car inside anyway for the next 2 or 3 months.
