Dancing Revs

Today when I was driving with a perfectly hot engine I noticed that if I push hard on throttle and if the revs are around 4000 they don't just steadily increase, but instead make a kind of 2-3 fluctuations around a middle point and only then go up... I noticed it on 3d, 4th and 5th gears. If I accelerate few times with 4-5 seconds intervals this effect disappears and the revs increase steadily again.
I have a Varioram 993 engine.
The spark plugs are about 7K and I have changed the oil and all filters just 300 miles back...
What it could be?

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

I would say spot on, Maurice.Just the symptoms I had whilst belting round Snetterton, shortly before the clutch let go (mileage = 48 thou).

Well, I can not say exactly, but the feeling was more like it comes from the engine than from the clutch... It was "normal" highway driving where I just pushed to accelerate quick...
The clutch itself is still OK, although not new (about 60K).
