Dangling relays

I have three relays dangling loose in the passenger's footwell. Two of them seem to be for the sunroof and electric windows, but can anyone tell me what the third one might be for ?
Also, I'm sure that Ferdinand didn't intend them to dangle - how and where should they be fixed ?
 
Relays shouldn't angle - they should be fixed, as Frenchy said. On that basis, it would be guesswork to tell what the other one is.

Has some horrid aftermarket botch-artist had a go at the car and hacked around the electrics?

But there's no room in the relay panel for these, and the diagrams/pictures I have seen do not show the windows or sunroof relay anywhere. All the other relays are in their proper places in the relay panel.
 
Has somebody added them in for something else like remote central locking for instance? Hence they have no correct mounting points.
 
No, no central locking or any other extras fitted (there was an alarm/immobiliser, but I cannot see anywhere that that interfered with the relay panel).
My panel looks like the one here http://944-world.com/earlyfusepanel.html- no mention of relays for sunroof or electric windows. Or perhaps originally they didn't have relays, just fuses ? Surely not ?
 
Our 924S's have 1 relay tucked against the transmission tunnel in the passenger compartment near the bulkhead fixed by a spring clip which has a projecting flat "tongue" which fits into a socket moulded on one side of the relay case.
I haven't deliberately investigated this area on the basis that -if it ain't broke ,don't fix it
 
Ah, that is interesting. If you're able to see any numbers or words on it, or ever find out what it's for, I'd be extremely interested.
 
Right-have had a look on the LHS today & I was wrong on 2 counts:-
First-there are 2 actual separately mounted relays-one reddish brown case marked Fensterheber no 944 615 112 01 virtually where I said before-i was wrong about the fitting-it actually has a spring clip riveted to the brown case & clips to a flat plate.

This is the courtesy light relay.
The other one has an aluminium plate riveted to the black case & is fixed by a self tapper upwards to bodywork near the glove locker-this is marked =-Radio.
 
That is interesting - Fensterheber is "Window lift", and that's what the one on my car does. The second one on mine is labelled something like "Shiebedach-Radio", which if my German hasn't let me down means "Sun-roof-Radio" (not sure why they go together). So it sounds like they just screw to the tunnel or glove-box. Surprised none of the experts seem to know about them !

I shall have to find out what relay I have (if any) for the courtesy light.
 
When I say -courtesy light relay- I was surprised given the German label-but it was merrily clicking away-as they do -with those Volkswagon door switches-(& mine are new) & did so when I pressed the switch.

Whether it controls anything else ,I did not investigate.

Should have said,-I read mine as "Heberdach"-Radio--that's all I could make out without unscrewing my head[:)]
 
I seem to remember dangling relays in my 924S's, but none in the later oval dash cars (mind you, I did a dash swap in the 924, so got quite familiar with all the wiring underneath..)
 
Although you car is an 84 944, I wonder if it has the same system as my 968 (they have a lot in common it seems!!).

Up alongside the near side of the glove box I have a second "relay and fuse holder" - it's open, not a box like under the bonnet. The fuse for the electric windows is there, as was the Bong relay that annoyed the hell out of me every time a door was opened or the lights were on when I switched the ignition off - I thought that was USA spec, but for some unknown reason my cab had it (no longer - it got sent on an Isle of Wight holiday). Also other things can be there if I'm reading the wiring diagram properly, but IIRC they're to do with Canadian, Japanese etc spec vehicles.

The only way to see this plate is the traditional flat on your back in the passenger footwell trick, which is fun! I only found it when my electric windows blew a fuse, and I could not find anything in the fuse box!

I am toying with the idea of rewiring the car, not least because I think I have 12v at both sides of some of the fuse holders (with the fuse removed, of course). Spent a couple of hours fighting the electric window system last night - had 12v to the switch and could not fathom the problem. Wiggled a couple of the fuses and the windows starting working again. But then the relay was permanently live (and getting warm), even with the ignition switched off. Closed windows and removed relay pending further investigation at the weekend. Just as well the weather has cooled down as the sunroof also has difficulty making up its mind whether to work or not.

I think the early 944 and the 968 are probably too different from each other. Presumably the 968 has a nice accessible relay/fuse box under the bonnet, where I just have a big empty space ? I've heard that rewiring an early 944 to use a late one's box is nigh on impossible, so it would mean a bespoke rewire.
 
If you'd like to PM me a mailing address, I can send you a DVD of the 944 and 968 workshop manuals - I know the 968 ones have wiring diagrams (which I have problems deciphering - but that's me). No guarantee that they'll help though!!
