Dash crack foam filler

Hi guys

As the title states I'm looking for a suitable filler to deal with a couple of cracks that have appeared during it's layup period......I plan to strip the old covering off and recover with a leather kit but need to deal with the cracks first. My question is 4 fold: has anyone else done this? .... which product did you use to fill the cracks?..... has it remained stable and for how long?...

cheers

Pete

I think the cracks will be in the vinyl and not the actual dash so if you strip it off it'll be fine then recover with leather.check this video it's not good but shows you whats under the vinyl.

Pete,

As has been said, I think the covering is what cracks, not the underlying foam. If it has, I saw a how-to guide on repairing it with expanding foam, pushed into the cracks and deflated as much as possible (thus making it as un-aerated as possible) with a small wooden spatula. When rubbed down it gave a smooth finish, which vinyl could be stuck onto.

thanks guys

I did find that video while searching for info a few days ago....he did a nice job...you guys may well be right that the cracks are only in the vinyl...I won't start prodding around until I'm ready to do the cover though...I have the kit now so just a matter of time....if we get everything back on the car this weekend (which is the plan) then I guess I could start on the interior while waiting for the chip/board to be returned from the US( it left today).
Carpets need a good clean, centre console will also be covered to match the dash and I have a hinge repair kit on order, I also have a few rubber seals on order to replace those that have gone hard and shrunk over the last 4 years. We also have a few pieces of wiring to do just to update wires that are well past their best...starter motor/alternator need doing and possibly the lighting circuit, we have a drop of around 1.5 volts which is dimming the lights a little so we may change that and also fit modern brighter bulbs
I was thinking that if the cracks are in the foam then perhaps some flexible 'Plastic bumper filler' may do the job....naturally I'll report back how things work out....:)

cheers

The guy in the video does make it look pretty easy, but I know that I don't have the patience or attention span to take it on myself. Is it not the sort of thing a coach-trimmer could do ?

possibly but I'm very capable of doing this for myself which TBO I prefer to do as I then have total control of the care that's taken to do it, I'm not working to a price.....:)

cheers
