Dash Pads - How do I get them off !

Anyone got any ideas as to how they' re fixed on ? I' m going to recover them but can' t work out how to get the blinking things off !! Car' s a 1968 911 T....

Saga with the interior continues .... hopefully trying to get it somewhere near completion for Rockingham next weekend !!

The pad on the dash top is held on by Nylon/plastic snap on' s. (At least mine are 68 912) You need to be very gentle to get it off without breaking them. Start at one end and pull gently.
 
Garfield - which part(s) are you referring to when you ask " Dash pads - how to get them off?"

If you mean the padded dash top, you need to remove the windscreen - the dashtop is held on by a combination of nylon ' snap-in' fasteners from above plus (from memory) 5 threaded studs/nuts through the front metal part of the dash accessed from under the bonnet.

If you mean the upholstered aluminium flat trim that runs across the front of the dash which houses the switches & goes around the heater controls & radio (if fitted) - once you remove all of the switches, it is held onto the metal dash by double-sided adhesive strips. They simply(!) pull off - but be careful not to bend them.

Finally, if you are referring to the ' knee pads' or ' crash roll' which are attached to the lower edge of the dash, these are held on by threaded studs/nuts.

Thanks for the help.

It' s the knee pads that I' m keen to take off in order to re-cover them. I' m just not sure where the stud/nuts actually are. They seem impossible to get to !

Garfield - I just happen to have a pair of ' 69 911 knee pads at home & my digital camera was handy, so ...

That' s fantastic.. Thank you very much. I' ll take them off next weekend and get them recovered. I assume you just undo those nuts that you indicated and they just drop off (no need to remove the aluminium front first ??).

Got the door panels made up this weekend. 4mm birch faced ply, coated in preservative and varnish and covered in basketweave ply. Should last longer than the fibreboard that was falling to bits.

Anyone know where I can get a couple of cheap front door bins ?

Garfield, for the bins try Mike Waring at Worldwide Classics.

I will be interested to see the result of recovering the kneepads as the vinyl has to be wrapped around the pad very tightly, indeed in Andy' s photos it looks as if the item is vacuum formed (?). I need to get my armrests done and they are formed. There is a company int he US that does this service Just Dashes and the results look fantastic. Who can do this in the UK?

Nick, you' re right, they are produced by some type of heat treatment - possibly vacuum forming. I have had a number of discussions with Mark Waring on this topic & I have been trying for the past couple of years to find a company (similar to Just Dashes) here in the UK that could refurbish or reproduce dash tops, knee pads, arm rests, etc but have not come across any to date that can produce these in limited quantities to a high standard for a realistic price.

* Belated congratulations on your recent (' 67 S) aquisition - I admire your optimism ! - I' ll keep my eye out for some 4 1/2 x 15 Fuchs for you.
 

I' m pretty confident I can do it.

I' ve recently recovered the door bins and the door panel window pad/elbow rest. The key is using strong contact adhesive and doing a bit at a time. You start at one of the hidden edges and glue that on. You then glue the next bit and stretch it over. The door panel window pad/elbow rest looks better than the real thing and the only problem with the door bin is because I' ve had it refabricated in aluminium it looks too smooth !

The door handles themselves are covered in vinyl but in a think plastic type material. I think they' d be much harder to do, so I' ve bought a couple of gsh ones from the states.
