Can any one advise what the ampmeter thingy should read when engine running, The last few months my unit has been showing approx 13+ Amps ..... Today on two v short journies First journey just over 12, second journey with lights on just under 12. Turning lights off made no difference, and revving the enging made no difference ..... Is something about to pack up.

mine reads approx 14v after start and then slowly drops back to about 13.8 after a reasonable run. jetbox

Go to a good Auto Electrians who should be able to service your own for around £100 mark. Usually when something goes it normally the diode pack or worn bushes. Here in Lancashire that what I was quoted at [link=http://www.ribblesdaleauto.co.uk/html/home/default.php]>>Ribblesdaleauto<<[/link]

BTW: its a voltmeter, not an ampmeter; hence measures the voltage (potential difference) across the battery terminals, rather than the amps (current) flowing in or out of the battery. The latter is rather more useful for diagnosing alternator problems, but very few (if any) cars have ampmeters these days.

Car is at Parrs and they tell me that the Alternator is faulty, and will install new, Car was already booked in for a service and a few other bits and pieces, so should get it back Mon/Tue all working .... Good news though it had a very good Varta Battery. Thanks for all help and suggestions.

Just a short update ..... The Alternator has failed .... Reason.... The Engine Oil Breather pipe had collapsed internally and spewed oil everywhere. This is a very expensive repair, see my other post on MOT and Oil leaks
