Dashboard lights

Just wondered if anyone could shed any light (!) on this potential problem with my car.

I haven't used the car much over Christmas due to the weather but when I have used it, it has not been for short journeys. A problem seems to be starting that is getting worse each time I have used the car for the last 6 times.

When I turn on the lights, the dashboard backlights and switch backlights don't come on straight away ( all of them apart from aircon display). Initially the delay was very brief but it seems to be taking longer each time now to the point where I have started counting! As I left work yesterday it took 7 seconds for the lights to come on and as I left our club meeting last night it took over 10! Once the lights come on they are fine with no flickering or anything.

I wondered if this could be battery related due to lack of use and the cold weather but when I have used the car, it has always started normally with no apparent issues. It had a 100 mile run on Saturday so I would hope that the battery would be in reasonable health and it's only a couple of years old.

Thanks in anticipation.

Becoming quite a common problem on the 996. First suspect is the ignition switch. You can buy just the switch part - it's a VW part - (no need to get the keys re-coded) and change it yourself fairly easily. There's a really good HOWTO here

ORIGINAL: Richard Hamilton

Quite possibly the light switch itself, as these often fail.

Doh! I think that was what I was thinking of, but ignition switch is embedded in my brain due to it causing grief on the VR6 at the moment!
