Here's another variation - easier to organise and would help assess levels of interest.

A couple of times a year I go to France for the day. Early tunnel, then blast through North West France. Some empty Autoroute to clear the cobwebs, then superb cross country routes, followed by a very good lunch. Then more leisurely return to Calais, dropping in at La Perouda for the best wines on sale in Calais, then home.

Day return on the tunnel is about £50, fuel quite a bit more.... I have routes, good roads, nice lunch spots etc.

Excellent idea for a day trip and you can also pick up 5l Mobil One oil at the supermarket for some 23 euros on the return...

If you had to pick 1-2 weeks during the summer

Second half of June/1st half of July/August are good for me.
Set up a poll?

Great idea. I'd be up for that provided I still have the Porsche. Please avoid Festival of Speed and Revival weekends!

We may want to avoid high summer as there's much more tourist traffic, and the gendarmes are more prevalent, Brit motorists being easy targets. What about late April or 1st/2nd week of May. Also weekdays are always less busy on the roads. What are views on a mid-week outing rather than weekend?

Difficult for self-employed to predict days they will be free over weekdays but will drop a poll and see what everyone thinks...

Sounds like a cracking day - I'd be up for it.

Don't mind weekends or during the week but agree it might be better before the summer rush. 18/19 May or 2/3 June anyone? Weekend in between is Bank Holiday so prob best avoided.

I am definitely interested in this trip - and I will do my best not to get lost!!
.....or follow me for any 'unscheduled rest stops' bringing the rest of the gang as spectators[:D]

2/3 June is good for me for the day trip[;)]

Not sure how accurate the school term times are on this site but it shows 2/3 June to be the weekend before summer half-term ends, might be too crowded at the ports.

Besides 2 June might be tricky for me as Liz II was crowned Queen of England on that day; oh and it is our wedding anniversary as well...

And you really think that the latter is a good enough excuse to miss out on a day trip to France [8|]?

Julian, I'll pass that comment to Kanta and you can sort it out with her to get me an all clear [;)]

Yes very keen, great photo shoot opportunity at Cap Gris Nez overlooking La Manche, fantastic coast road from Calais to Wimereux/Wissant great little sea food retaurants with typical market town squares for even more photos.Tunnel should do us a deal subject to numbers, also free wine tasting at Franglais load up way back......[:D] best go off-season over to you Kish...[;)]

OK seems as if we have some good potential support here, and ideas for routes and food stops.

Past trips have started with a fast blast down to Abbeville area on A16 (it's gets it out of our system...) then cross country in a zig zag back towards Calais with various stops generally involving fuel, food and fine wine.

All other suggestions welcome.

Dates: May is probably unworkable with the bank holiday and half term (why don't schools all pick the same week??)

So how about June 9th? Schools are safely back in session and it's before the summer holiday season starts.Weather should be half decent. And it's before Le Mans. Current day return fare is £54.

If that's too long to wait, then perhaps the 14th or 21st April.

Let's agree a date, get it in the diary and we can then start working on the main issue - where to stop for lunch...
