de-snorking

hi,

just been reading an article on 'de-snorking' a 986 boxster. It's a process of removing the side air vent, and discarding of the safety snorkal oval tube, giving improved performance and better induction note. has anyone achieved/experienced this process, and is it really worth doing? without having any negative effects on the vehicle?

Try looking on the Planet9 site. This topic has been covered a lot over the years.

The 986 has a restrictive air inlet by virtue of the schnoerkel and the flat panel filter which is relatively small and blocks quickly. Modifying the inlet to remove restictions will help the engine to breathe better at high rpms and pick up quicker at lower revs. Fitting a K N filter has some risk as it can cause oil from the filter to carry over to the Mass Airflow Sensor ( MAF) and contaminate it causing it to fail. The gains from de snorking and air filters are limited and not likely to give a significant real world gain on their own. If combined with a larger throttle body or reworked intake and exhaust the gains are more significant. Personally if fitting a new filter to attain a performance gain i would opt for the BMC rather than K and N element as they are in my opinion better made. One thing to note is that the schnoerkel is , as its name suggests designed to separate air and water and prevent water getting onto the MAF , causing errors and engine misfires etc. By removing or modifying it you increase the risk to expose the MAF to water contamination in heavy rain or when travelling in heavy spray on motorways etc.
