Dead Alternator

Driving back from Manchester to Leicester today the car died about 15 miles from home []

I did not take any notice if its relevant, but the ABS warning buzzer and light came on first thing this morning and then no problem.

It then came on again just before breaking down and the car just came to a stop, fortunately adjacent to a pub [;)]

Anyway the AA man arrived within 15 mins and diagnosed that the batter was flat, put a new battery in and it fired straight away but checked that there was no charging voltage from the alternator, etc, etc...........

So off to Shirley's to see Martin at Porsche Tech tomorrow after a full charge...

Is there anything else that would do this, like a relay or ?

Thanks

Mark

Mark,

It sounds like a dead alternator I must admit. I'm assuming your "Alternator Charge" light stays on when you start the car?? Does it EVER go off - like when the revs get to 3000??? If you are suffering the 3000 rev charge syndrome your problem may be the poor connections at the rear of the clock. I don't recall the clock problem giving rise to a flat battery though, so your diagnosis might be right.

Regards

Dave

Hi Dave,

No, the "Alternator Charge" warning light never came on during the drive home today, that's why I could not understand how I had a flat battery ?

Thanks

Mark

Mark, I recall Neil Eldred (Yorkshire region) replacing the alternator as a DIY job, maybe you could contact him if you fancy doing the job yourself. I could always supply references to the 964 manual if that would help.

Sincerely

Hi Jeff,

It was the starter motor that I changed not the alternator. If you want help with that I am VERY experienced in removal and refitting with one thing and another to do with that [:)]

Also have changed the oil tank relay and steering rack on a C2 in case anyone needs a pointer or two.

Regards,

Neil Eldred

A few months ago I had a dead alternator problem on my Volvo, the ignition light didn't come on at all so my immediate thought was the battery itself had failed. However, when I checked the alternator output it was nil. I replaced the alternator, recharged the battery and all was well, that was until yesterday when the battery died. Off to buy a battery tomorrow.
Cheers,

Thanks to all who have answered/suggested

I am not convinced that it is the Alternator now after looking at some of the experiences on the renlist forum about batteries behaving peculiar and not allowing the a charge ?

I have had no Battery Warning Light except for a brief flicker very occasionally, but going to get it checked out.

Battery has been on charge all night, so hopefully it will do a 30 mile run down to Martin at Porsche Tech !

I meant the sender unit so you can tell how much oil is in the tank. I knew it didnt sound quite right []

Neil Eldred

Dave,

Martin at Porsche Tech has diagnosed a dead Alternator [:(] oh well can't grumble as the car is 13yrs old.

Thanks for the help

Mark

Hey Neil, I knew you attempted something to do with the starting side of things, though Cheers Dave for putting him right. I never said I trusted him and I did say I'd refer to the manual....(rather female of me to refer to the instructions-must go for a drive and get it out of the system)

:)

Jeff
