anyone got any info on trickle charging the battery through the sugared lighter in a 996 c4s .
cheers

IIRC the 996 cigarette lighter socket isn't live with the ignition off, unlike the 997, so can't be used to trickle charge/condition the battery. However, I'm sure someone with better 996 knowledge than me will be along soon to confirm or put me straight!

Hi Guys
I'm pretty sure that any post 2001 3.6 996.2 should have a permanently 'live' socket. The 996.1 is switch live only.

My 2003 C4S started first time this weekend after sitting for over 2 weeks. I had a trickle charger on it and the user manual confirmed the cigarette lighter could be used as it is permanently live.

Regards

My 2002 Targa sits happy plugged into a Porsche trickle charger in via the cigarette lighter socket. Car is Weekend/hols only use & no probs in 5 years of ownership.

I use a ctek trickle charger and have no problems with starting after long periods. I highly recommend them. I've used the cigarette lighter socket but now have an extension permanently connected to the battery and I leave cable in trunk when not charging.

I also sit mine permanently attached to a trickle charger. Had too many slow starts and not starting. So I wired a plug socket next to the car with a RCD in it and it just sits on that. It's been fine ever since. I have mine to the battery though only difference.

May be worth a battery check as well - on a healthy battery I am usually OK for at least 2 weeks, crossing my fingers up to 3, but just about hanging in there, but pretty much no chance after that, particularly if its wintertime.....

CTEK 3.8 charger sits nicely against the spare wheel in the trunk and is permanently attached to my battery. Works like a charm.

Can confirm that 996.2 cigarette lighter socket is permanently live, so you could use that too.
