Dead Car???

Hi,

alarm was playing up yestrerday ( H & P: pa1000 ) - and going off after I'd locked the car[>:].

Didn't have time yesterday, and alarm seemed to turn itself off and not start up again.

So plan was to sit in it today[8D], and go through the alarm bleeps / flashes from the led - to find the fault code...BUT went to use the remote - nothing - remote central locking wouldn't open it []( recently I've had to stand closer and closer to get thsi to work )

[:'(]The leds on the door lock pins weren't flashing either[].

So opened the door with the key, and saw the alarm led on the centre console was not flashing.
Put key in ignition and turned on - but nothing from dashboard - none of the usual advice lights etc,. that come on when you turn on th eignition, and obviously nothing from trhe engine.[X(]

Thought 'B#gg#er' - car battery must be totally flat[8D], so took it out and put it on charge - but charger is showing virtually no current running to it - so either the car battery is absolutely dead,

or something much worse is going on with the alarm / electrics??[:'(]

Any ideas on what to try next??

Thanks T[&:]

Sounds like a typical dead battery. Bosch 'Silver' from GSF or EuroCarParts is a good price and very reliable.

Fit a new battery and I'll bet you'll be up and running as normal again. Might be worth getting a battery conditioner too if you don't use the car much, and have somewhere to keep it plugged in (garage/drive).

A couple of suggestions...

1) Depending upon battery age, that could have suffered a reduction in capacity after the recent cold weather; or

2) May be a problem with the Hamilton & Palmer PA1000 alarm/immobiliser... for example, it could be a loose connection on one of the banana plugs, or the control unit may have passed away! However, you may need to remove the driver seat to get to the unit and it's probably better to ask an expert...

I would happily recommend contacting Hamilton & Palmer directly:

I have found them to be very helpful, happy to make a home visit and remarkably good value compared to an OPC!

Best of luck!

RSGulp and Stig - Thanks for suggestions,

I'm hoping its the car battery - wil leave it on trickle chgarge tonight and test it tomorrow.

forgot to mention - the car battery was flattened 2 days ago ( guessing due to the flashing hazzard lights, so I'd charged it up, and gone for a 1/2hr spin to make sure it was fully recharged. Battery is only 6 months old - so 'should' be fine[8|].

One bit of concern - there was a short spell of high-ish pitched squeak the other day, so thought perhaps fan belt may slack = not charging battery properly?
I've changed / tightened the belt on our old 3.2 carrera - but that looks like a much simpler task than the 993 arrangement?

Def. sounds like battery, had it on mine over xmas, then once new battery fitted, couldn't believe use to I'd become to a slow starter motor, it just flew into action... My Bosch Silver was about £105 fitted from Halfords :)

Agree sounds like battery - loads of places offer free battery test to give it the once over - then start looking at at alam system

Regards

I had some 'wierdness' with my PA1000, like you remote wouldn't work. Turns out the immobiliser was 'on' and I had no power to turn off, from memory you can reset by 3 key turns in the drivers door??..

yes - there is something like that in the manual - but does anyone know if it works (ever tried it)? - I ask because it is in the section that is written as if you have the original German alarm system. So I always assumed it did not work with UK spec cars.
