Dead wing mirrors

Hi guys, i am having some trouble with the automatic wing mirrors on my S2(1989). They have recently decided not to adjust. They worked fine on Friday but nothing today. I have removed the little joystick switch to confirm that it was seated correctly but still nothing. I tried to test the joystick for continuity and all seemed fine (but im not entirely convinced as the schematic i have is a messy and im not sure i tested the right thing) . Im fairly sure it must be either the changeover switch (to choose mirror) or the joystick at fault. But im struggling to idenify which (if it is either). The reason i think its these components is because as far as i can tell these are the only shared components for both mirrors and neither mirror is currently functioning. I have checked the fuse and it seems okay.

Any advice on how to go about diagnosing the problem better would be most appreciated.

Cheers

Sounds like you are working along the right lines and I like your logic about the failure ... can you short out the changeover switch (i.e. take it out of circuit) and test like that?

And what about a better schematic for that joystick? Or possibly a wiring fault somewhere?

Or find some spare parts (a known-good joystick, for instance) and swap that in? Although this is pretty clumsy/ugly diagnostics ...

Oli.

I had a problem with my electric windows shorting out which I traced back to a stripped wire where the loom goes from the door into the body of the car. The rubber bung had stripped over time and all the wires were nicely rubbing away!

Aye, i think my next step will be to get the door panels off and trace the cabling and compare against the schematic i have (its the 944 workshop manual one but in electronic form so i am going to print it off and join the necessary pages together.

I will try shorting the changeover switch and check to see if that is the problem too. Will also check the cabling for any bare wires but i would have a thought a short to earth would take the fuse out?

Fixed it!! Well kind off. I took the door panels off and carefully checked the loom. I found 2 broken connections where some previous solder joints had broken (i suspect fatigue) - a quick bodge using some tape allowed me to test it and both mirrors worked nicely. I just need to go back and finish the job now with a few pieces of new pieces of wire and some solder.

Cheers for all the help guys.
