R5 Member 4 Dec 2011

Member News
Welcome to new members David Lomas (Plumley), Simon & Fiona Tracy Forster (Wrenbury - Cayman S), David Hughes (West Kirby), Philip Kinsella (Cheadle Hulme - 911 SC), Richard Dears (Prescot), Chandra Dakshinamurthi (Cheadle Hulme) and Jonathan Davies & Miss Parsons (Chester - 993 C). Your fellow R5 members and I look forward to meeting you at one of our forthcoming events.

Next R5 Event
The next R5 event is our December Club Night, this coming Wednesday "" one week earlier than originally scheduled "" at the Deanwater Hotel, starting at 2000. (See FORTHCOMING R5 EVENTS below for more information.)

2012 Calendar of Events
The initial version of our 2012 Calendar of Events will be distributed with my January 2012 Newsletter. As of now activities are already in place for all but two of our Club Nights, but we have only been able to determine the destination for just one of the scheduled Summer Sunday and like outings. Accordingly, I would welcome any suggestions for a Club Night presentation or other activity, or for a Summer Sunday outing. (See also Help in 2012 below.)

Region Organisation (February 2012 Club Night)
Following the retirement in September of two long-serving members, the R5 Committee currently consists of only four members, namely Chris Clark (Club Motorsport Board Chairman), Phil Graham, myself (as RO) and my wife Keri. Furthermore, as announced at the PC Wilmslow Open Evening in November, I will be retiring from the post of RO (and from the Committee) following the Club AGM in April 2012, and as of now it has not been possible to identify anybody to take over that role. (Keri will also retire from the Committee at that time.) Hence, the Committee needs to be reinforced, first as a Committee but also so as to be able to run the Region. R5 is now well and truly "˜on the map' - not least as a result of our hugely successful events at Arley Hall - and has assembled an inventory of event equipment that must be the envy of most other Regions. It would, therefore, be a great shame were it to not continue to operate at much the same level of activity as it has for the last few years.
Accordingly, our 8 February 2012 Club Night will be devoted to consideration of how the Region is to be organised following my retirement, and I appeal to all R5 members who have any interest in the future of the Region to come along and contribute to that process. In the mean time I would be grateful to hear from any member who is, or might be, willing to join the Committee, or, even better, to play a more significant role, either alone or jointly with another member, in the future running of the Region.

Help in 2012
This year has seen a modest, but very welcome, increase in the number of R5 members volunteering to share the load, with the Committee, of organising events. Given the potential difficulties with the future running of the Region referred to above, I cannot emphasise enough the need for yet more members to support the Region in this way during the coming year. Without such help there will simply be fewer opportunities for you to enjoy using your Porsches in the company of other R5 members.

FORTHCOMING R5 EVENTS
December 7: Club Night
Our December Club Night will be split into two parts, starting with a short presentation by Mike Newman, former three-times Guinness world blind land-speed record holder, on both his plans for recovering the title during the coming year, driving a Porsche, and his Speed of Sight car rally - "˜Destination Manchester' - scheduled for April 20/21 2012 (for more information go to www.speedofsight.co.uk). The second part of the evening will comprise a slide-show entitled "˜No Picnic on Mount Kenya'.
In recognition of the time of year, complimentary mince pies and coffee/tea will be served prior to the start of the slide-show.

January 11: Club Night
Our first Club Night of 2012 will, like this year, take the form of a New Year Dinner at the regular Deanwater Hotel venue, where we will gather at 1930 in readiness to sit down at 2000. As they kindly did in January this year, the Hotel will provide a special choice of fare, comprising a selection of dishes from the regular Tudor Bar Restaurant menu, at a fixed price of £15pp for a starter, main course and coffee, or £18pp with dessert (inclusive in each case of a gratuity for the staff). PC Wilmslow Principal Steve Webb and his wife have been invited to be our guests and our customary Regulars Rewards draw will take place following the meal, so don't forget to bring along all those cloakroom tickets you received at the Club Nights you attended during 2011.
To make the evening more special than our regular Club Nights please dress up a bit, or more - as you prefer - with all gentlemen members wearing jackets. The Hotel would like to accommodate us in the room best suited to the number of participants, so please contact me ASAP, preferably by e-mail, to let me know your booking requirements. A deposit of £10pp will be required.

February 26: "Porschemeirion Drive & Lunch"
I am bringing this event to your attention now because, as indicated in the attached flyer, we have been able to secure special discounted prices for a limited number of rooms for participants who might also like to stay overnight in Portmeirion Village following the drive & lunch. Said prices are, however, only available up to 2100 on Sunday 18 December, so if you wish to take advantage of this offer you will need to act promptly.

OTHER CLUB ACTIVITIES
Please note this information is provided solely to alert you to other Porsche events at venues not too far from home that you may wish to attend. It does not mean any formal R5 presence is planned.

January 12 - 15 Autosport International, NEC
See December PP for more information, including competition for two pairs of free tickets

Wishing you a joyful Christmas and a settled 2012.

Regional Organiser
