Decibel Readings Prior to Track Use.

Hi Guy's,
Just after a bit of advise, what's the best way to measure static decibel readings prior to track use, I have read somewhere that the meter should be approx. 3 feet/ 1 metre away behind the car mounted on a tripod or hand held and the RPM raised to between 5k to 6k on a warm engine ?
regards

Pete

Pete,

MSA rules state for static measurement (and track day operators follow this protocol):

  • Measurements will be made at 0.5m from the end of the exhaust pipe with the microphone at an angle of 45° with the exhaust outlet and at a height of 0.5 to 1.0m above the ground with the engine running at ¾ maximum speed. (not having a red line helps here)
  • Measurements should be made outdoors with no large reflecting objects (e.g. walls etc.) within 3.0m.

Make sure engine is at operating temperature, turning off aircon helps I am told (never done it myself). Build revs slowly to the required level; do not rev it up and fall back to required level as they'll likely record highest db number.

You don't say where you are but if near Goodwood (or any other track except Silverstone) you could call the circuit office and pop over one day when they have a track day running and they'll likely test your car at the end of the noise testing session.

Don't forget drive by noise limits; Brands for one seems to have reasonable static level (101db?) but low drive by.

Where are you likely to go on track and what car with what exhaust?

Noise limits vary from Circuit to Circuit as well as the method of Noise Testing.
In addition to Static Noise Tests at various R.P.M. many Circuits also continuously monitor "drive by" noise levels.
This is quite a broad subject so the short answer is, if you would like some specific advice please feel free to call me.
All the best.

Ralph, Gary,
thanks for the feed back some really good and helpful tips, I have not used my own 911 997.2 Carrera C2S on track before as I have always used other cars, but am thinking about using my own car this year and just wanted to make sure, so have ordered DB meter. The car has the new Porsche sports switchable exhaust system fitted and I know to switch this off on track days but I just wanted check with someone in the know what the correct set up should be prior to using the car.
Appreciate all your comments.
regards

Pete

Hard to be sure but microphone looks closer than 0.5m to the exhaust outlet on that pic and definately closer than 0.5m from the ground!
