Hi,
I am going to buy a 996 turbo and my budget means I am probably looking 2001-03 but I am drawn to the 500 hp ones with sports exhaust etc but is this a mistake? Also should i go manual or tip tronic (I am going to use it everyday but will also do trackdays and want to be able to drive it without it changing gear until I want to)

Richard will be along to discuss the benefits of Tips (or not). By all accounts, it suits the Turbo very well.

By "500hp", I take it you mean a car that has had the ECU flashed. You can reasonably reliably run a Turbo up to 490bhp without any other internal modifications. A Turbo S can be flashed to about 520bhp. If you want to go to more than that, you need to start looking at internal modifications as the stresses increase significantly. Edit: Just looked at your PH homepage so I guess you know that. [;)]

If you haven't gone down the 996 Turbo route before, go and have a test drive of a standard (420bhp) one and decide if you really need the extra. They are astonishingly quick as they are and marginally more useable on-road than the Turbo S (smaller turbochargers on the non-S so a faster spool up).

I'm sure you will but get a pre-purchase inspection done as well.

Cheers john, good name by the way! Seen a 52 plate 55k standard turbo for 24999 that seems to tick all the boxes so going to see it hopefully tomorrow.
