Deep 7's Fuchs

Just about to start a 911R replica project with 911 Classic based on a rust free 1972 shell. I have 4x deep 6s and understand that Weidman Wheels in the States could convert two of these to deep 7's.

I would like to create a "deep 8" and wonder if anyone knows if this has been done and if so any ideas on who I should go to.

Reason is that we plan to transplant a 3.6 with PMO injection throttle bodies etc, so could do with the extra tyre width, but retain the deep fuchs look.

I'm fairly sure that they wouldn't work.

When deep sixes are converted into 911R-spec 7" wheels, the extra inch is added to the inside of the wheel thus retaining the same outer appearance.

To fit these to the rear of a '72 car you need to typically add a 15mm spacer to prevent the tyre interfering with suspension components.

To create an 8" wheel you would need to add the extra 2" to the inside of the wheel in order to retain the same outer appearance so you would need to add a spacer of somewhere around 40mm (!!) in order for the inner edge of the tyre to clear the suspension... if you actually tried to do this you would then find that the tyre wouldn't fit anyway due to fouling the wheelarch lip.

Incidentally you need to be aware that there is usually a waiting list for Harvey Weidman's work which is typically 8+ months ...

Thanks for the input.

I read an article in the August edition of Porsche and 911 World that stated the featured R-Gruppe cars used a 1.5 inch spacer with their deep 7's, so this made me wonder if an 8 could be made to fit.

We have access to the Silver car featured so will see if this gives any clues.

Importantly is the heads up re the 8 month wait...better get the 6's sent off soonest!

I have used a chap in Germany to widen deep 6s to 7Rs. It certainly wasn't 8 months. I can do the RSR finish, slightly differently to Weidman's RSR finish, if you want that as well..

We have emailed.

I need to pick up the Carbon 12 calipers when they are ready and will talk to you then about sorting the 7Rs and a set of 6s to RSR finish.

best Simon
