Deep/flat fuchs

early 911

Further to my little ditty in the Post this month someone has told me there is a difference between the way these two rims mount to the hub (something like . . . one centres itself and the other doesn't). Anyone know more (apologies if this is a dumb question)?

He said I could tell simply by looking closely at their rears (but I've only got deeps and can't find detailed enough photos).

BTW - He also told me that running deep 6's without tubes is a big no, no (I suggested in the mag that people do this with little complaint). I'll stick with my tubes, just to be on the safe side . . . I strongly recommend you do the same.

I've never heard this before & I don't think it's true.

I inspected, measured & photographed a 'deep dish' & a 'flat face' 6x15" Fuchs wheel today & couldn't see any difference in the way they mount to the hub. The wheels are located via the wheel studs & the spherical portion of the alloy wheelnuts centralises the studs within the bolt holes in the wheel.

As for running 'deep dish' Fuchs without tubes I disagree - many people both here & in the States have run these on tubeless tyres for years. I personally have driven thousands of (enthusiastically-driven !) miles without any problems whatsoever...

Thanks Andy,

I too hadn't heard of this, and looking at the pictures I can't see anything specific (although the top picture seems to have more going on inside the central hole . . i.e smooth surface on the bottom picture, but ridges on the top picture) . . . which is which BTW.

As for tubes . . . well, the gentleman raising this concerns was a certain Eion Sloane (race car register) . . . he qoted various homoligation rules. I know that many people run them without . . . but I suppose the 'offical line' has to be tubes (as Porsche intended).

Does anyone know which, if either, 6x15 Fuch wheel was used for the 'spacesaver' spare on the RS?

Apparently it's not the standard Fuch wheel and has the part no. 911.361.020.10

Phil - the top photo is the deep six.

Oliver - the RS used a standard 'flat face' 6x15" Fuchs when it used a Fuchs spacesaver - many had a steel wheel as spare.

There were 2 part numbers for 'flat face' 6x15 Fuchs wheels :

911.361.020.00 which accepts the 3-prong centre caps &

911.361.020.10 which is the later version which accepts the ring-type centre caps.

The change occurred sometime in '73 (possibly coinciding with the start of the '74 model year) so it is unlikely that the later version was used on the RS.

Where did you get your information from regarding the part number ?

Andy,

David Gilhooley, who bought his spacesaver Fuch from Russell Edmond a few years ago.

It had been my understanding (confirmed in the Gruber & Konradsheim book) that the RS Fuch spacesaver was a standard 6x15. However, Jeff Moyes also says it's a slightly different wheel.

Anyone know anyone who can fit a 165 spacesaver to a standard 6x15 Fuch?
