Delighted new owner

Only just over 24 hours of ownership under my belt and I'm feeling the need to post to say how delighted I am with the Boxster.

Taking a step back for a moment, a couple of months ago I was contemplating selling both the 964 and the 944, adding some money, and buying a 996 GT3. The two downsides to this plan were having to say goodbye to the 964 and using the GT3 as all-year-round transport.

I decided against this but knew that it was time to swap the 944 for something else. This was my third 944, and much as I hate to be negative about them as they were my entry into Porsche and I've had many good times, I never really bonded with the S2.

When looking at Boxsters there was the obvious question about which type/model/year to go for. Because I didn't know how much I was going to like them I didn't want to stretch finances too far, but equally didn't want to go too cheap and risk buying a problem car that would sour the experience.

In the end I saw a late 2003 2.7 advertised at a Honda dealership, went to see it, had a test drive, did the due diligence on paperwork, and struck a deal. I've gone into this with my eyes open as I must have read almost every word on the internet about the reported engine failures. The car has had regular servicing and has 54K on the clock, so I'm hoping it's going to last. If it doesn't then I'll just have to put my hand in my pocket. I had an engine failure on a previous 944 and the 964 isn't exactly low maintenance so I'm prepared.

The photo I've attached is from the Autotrader advert as I haven't had time to take any myself! You know how it goes, new car equals obligatory test rides for friends and family.[:D] It's not exactly a chore!

But back to the experience itself, this car is such a joy to drive. Nicely weighted, precise controls with great feel and feedback. Rock solid road holding, sharp turn-in, great balance, and a nice soundtrack at the upper end of the rev range. I was half expecting a flimsy feel after much talk about mass production and cheap materials but not a bit of it. The feel of the structure/body is one of absolute solidity and the interior seems well built. The dash, while perhaps lacking in dials (why no oil pressure?), is well laid out and easy to read. The storage capacity using both boots and numerous cubby holes must be huge.

In short, I wish I'd bought one years ago! No previous car has gotten under my skin so quickly. As an everyday, all occasion car why would you want anything else?! I know many of you will be smiling at the noob who has only just discovered what you have known for some time, but rest assured if the ownership experience continues in this vein then I will be evangelising the Boxster whenever I can!

I've only spotted one fault so far and this is a slight rattle from the rear. Not in time with the engine, sounds very much like an exhaust or heat shield (he hopes [&:]). I had a quick look underneath and there is a nut missing from the heatshield that separates the boot floor from the exhaust so this will be my starting point.

Thinking ahead, the car is on its original clutch, which I'm guessing may be in its twilight years (though it feels fine). Has anyone upgraded their IMS bearing with one of the non-Porsche alternatives as this is something I would likely want to do when the clutch expires?

I wonder what the 'S' is like to drive. I'm guessing fairly similar but with the fat torque curve of my 964?

Well done on your new Boxster. The car looks great, and I found as you have that they are very practical. Enough boot space for the weekly shop and excellent performance. What more do you want. Enjoy.

Your smiling now - just wait till the sun shines - that should make you chuckle even more[:D]

Hi Neil. I am sure you will really enjoy the Boxster. While new to the Porsche scene I think they are a great car and as John said just wait and wait [:)] till the sun comes out. I am sure you will have hours of enjoyment. May see you out at some events in the future. [:)]

After 5 911's I bought my first Boxster in May 1997 and currently I am on my 6th example and have never looked back

If you ignore all the asinine comments that have been made during it's 16 years the truth is from day one and through every single facelift and model generation to date it has been unbeatable by any of its competition and IMO is the only true traditional sports car currently on offer from Porsche

Enjoy every single mile half as much as I have done and you will be permanently smiling especially when the roof is down [8D]

With prices today being historically so low their has never been a better time to grab one of the all time great sports cars from Porsche

This video is the opinion of a 911 die hard with the usual Boxster bashing but .... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gk-6s-ZhlYs

Thanks everyone for the very warm welcome. I have had the roof down a few times (in between rain showers) to give those in the passenger seat the full experience; it does add another dimension. I am already a full convert and can see myself updating the Boxster to newer versions in the future, but happy to enjoy the one I have for now.

Congratulations on your purchase Neil. I too can fully appreciate your happiness, they really are a delight!!

I am a technician by trade and had the absolute pleasure of carrying out some repair work to a 2001 Boxster S. The dream has always been to own a 911 and I am a huge Porsche fan (truth be known, Pre 89 Carrera/930) but was utterly smitten once back from road test in the Boxster. No longer than 2 months since working on that Boxster and I have one of my own. It has been a little troublesome but I am over the moon with it.

The build quality in certain places seems a little weak, but from a complete package they are superb. The driving experience is nothing short of sensational. It feels like a properly sorted roadster, the best car I've owned for sure.

Happy motoring [8D]

Just out of interest, as a new owner, what sort of niggles did you have?

And you too, enjoy [:)]

The majority of the niggles I've had seem to be the result of a specialist that looked after the car. By that I mean, full service, replace some filters and brakes charge big money and miss the vital niggles. I've had problems with the invoiced repair work that this "specialist" did to the car. I did infact call the company in regards to a component which had failed well within the 12 month period, only covering some 1,000miles since they supplied and fitted it to which they instantly invalidated the warranty over the phone as I was a new owner. I didn't bother to chase this up as I sorted this out myself.

The niggles I've had are...

-Offside Cat heat shield mountings were rusted to oblivion, simple fix
-I have spotted a temp repair on the boot lock cable to which it appears the cable has snapped in the past and has been repaired by using an electrical connector to join the cable back together. I have since found that this is a very common issue and the cable cannot be sourced separately and so will cost £100 along with the actuator.
-Mass air flow (MAF) sensor failed
-Moisture around boot lid after a long drive. Have ordered a new coolant cap
-Convertible roof tension cable needs replacing, the roof closes the wrong side of the plastic sometimes.
-Drivers side heated seat does not work. Knew this when I purchased the car, will look into this in the future.
-I had a creaking from the offside front. Replaced lower suspension arm (coffin arm)
-Replaced nearside rear anti-roll bar link arm (slight play) & replaced rear anti-roll bar bush's (slight play)

I am very very 'anal' when it comes to rattles, squeaks, bodged, worn, melted, on fire etc so some of the above would have been OK. I'm sure if the 'Specialist' that was charging horrific rates for the servicing and repairs was doing his job properly, these issues would have been picked up and at least noted on the invoices.

Still over the moon with it [:D] Just a pain it's raining again!

Gaz, thanks for the detailed reply. Most of those sound familiar from my pre-purchase research except the snapped/bodged boot cable, which I'll have a look at. Not sure what the problem with your heated seats might be. I'm guessing it will be a relatively simple circuit comprising heating element, switch and possibly a relay; though they appear to have a high/low setting so there might be more to it. Perhaps someone had the seat out and didn't re-attach the connector for the heated seats? I wonder if you could temporarily swap the wiring connector between left/right switches to see if it's the switch or something further upstream.

Re rain - Yes, where's the oft-mentioned barbecue Summer.[:D]

[8D]Hi Neil, and congrats on your new car.
It must be nice to be able to choose between the
964 and the Boxster.
I own a 2002 S model and didn't realise
how good they are, only when u drive it can u appreciate
the handling.
Am in the middle of changing a driveshaft, due to it breaking down in France.
Have had the car about a year and pure pleasure.
Hoping 4 some sunshine soon!

Thanks Acer[:)]

Yes, the Box and 964 are very different machines but each great in their own way.

I don't remember reading about driveshaft problems with the Boxster during my research, but sounds like you're onto it. I'm going to try and DIY it wherever I can. The exhaust rattle I mentioned earlier seems to be catalyst heat shield fixings that have corroded. I've ordered the parts so will fix in the next few days.

Good to hear that you're still pleased with it after a year of ownership.
