Demist button stuck "on"

Sorting the car out for the long trip to my new home, 300 miles one way...

It's damp inside, so hit the "demist" button and left it running for an hour. Now, I can't turn it off!

It puts the fan and heat on maximum, so 300 miles is going to be warm and noisy. I'm guessing just the switch corroded, but is there an obvious way to bypass it? Just pulling the blower fuse or something won't be ideal as I'll need some warmth/demisting I guess, but any ideas?
 
Remove the switch and pull the wiring connector off, plug back in if you need to demist on the journey ?

Deserves several hilarity points. The switches are pretty simple beasties and you can take them apart fairly easily if you have time, a clean workbench and steady hands. A bit of a knock may well get it going as a short-term solution.

I would try using a small thin bladed knife around the edges of the switch to very gently pry up on an edge - work opposite sides. The likely cause is a build up of crud around the edge of the switch. Over time the lubricant in the switch can attract dust, etc. which can cause it to bind it up. If you are going to remove it, try giving it a liberal spray of electrical contact cleaner all around the edge of the switch - might solve the problem and should do no harm.
 
Clean bench and time aren't really what I have now. I have piles of boxes and a limited amount of days!

Good news is the car's going to be MOTd and back with me. The bad news is all the little niggles a car that's been laid up for 6 months outside has developed. Wiper switch is dodgy, boot release popped one of the arms, door handles need cleaning out as they're sticking, gauges all a bit erratic etc.

Most I can live with, and once it's back in almost daily use it'll be fine. just goes to show how they hate being left parked up and unloved! I have to say that the run today, first in 6 months, was wonderful. I'd forgotten how great the thing is, although frosty roads caught me out. [&:]

Only one that's really an issue is the sheer heat from the fan on full blast for 300 miles. Might just have to pull the switch as suggested.

Just to clarify, the switch isn't actually "stuck" in, it's just that pushing it doesn't do anything. I also don't think the light was working, so there's a contact gone wrong somewhere.

So true, so true ... it's not high mileage that kills cars, it's not being used. I didn't realise yours was off the road for a period.

Hang on, the rules say you need an example of a model to be RS of that model, but they don't say that your car needs to be on the road, eh? Hmmm .... :rolleyes:

Even looser rules than that. You can stand for the role even if you don't have the car, but are intending to get one. I think it's in place in case a Register Sec was to sell their car , have it stolen or written off or something, but intended to replace it. [:)]
