Hi all - to avoid posting the same thing in lots of places, can I tell you about my post on rennlist coving some of my poor-running problems (I imagine most people look at 911uk & rennlist as well as here) Here's a link to the thread:

If your alternator is producing current above 2000rpm but not below, might be worth having the voltage regulator checked. £102 for a new one,

Your cap and rotors look like the're in a similar state to mine before I changed them, hard to tell from the pics, but the contacts on the cap look a bit worn.






 
By an amazing coincedence, Bobster had hot running problems when his car came back from the bodyshop. It was solved by a simple DME reset. Have a read:

One way of checking the dizzy caps is to diconect each coil pack and see if the car starts and runs OK. Engine should run OK with six plugs, if for any reason it doesn't then you have isolated which disributor, leads or plugs which are causing a problem. If it runs the same with each one disconnected its unlikely to be an ignition issue. You would be unlucky to have the same issue with both sets of distributors.

That's a lovely picture of a lovely 964(sob,sob) but at least yours has had recent caps & rotors ( but not leads)-I was always pleased how it never seemed to experience the niggling electrical problems that forum users had-apart from needing a quick spray of WD40 down the inside of the passenger locking knob now & again to stop it getting slightly stiff & upsetting the central locking.
I have found a piece,I think the LHS exhaust cover wrapped in clingfilm in the depths of the garage so I will let you have it in the future-Woodvale would be opportune if you are going-let me know-as we are at our cottage on the IOM at present.

I've heard stories of how hard it is changing the O2 sensor, so I was going to buy one of the cheap £60 bypass pipes off ebay at the same time. Has anyone used one and noticed a difference? I hear a poorly positioned O2 sensor can actually lose power.
 
Just tidying up my threads ... new spark plugs and resetting valve clearances seemed to do the trick.

Still a slightly rough idle, which I hope to correct with thorough clean of the intake.
 
A thread tidy-up (... this is probably getting boring now, but it might help someone in the future!)

Problem was a leaky & loose inlet breather pipe in the end OR a good air flow clean - but who knows what problems I caused along the way. New leads, new plugs, new coils, valve clearances all seemed to have a bit of an impact but nothing really cured it.

AOK now ... until next week that is !
