Diagnostics on 944 1988 onwards

I thought the following link from JDS Porsche might be interesting for those 944 owners that like me were unaware of that their cars have a self diagnostic facility built in.

The ECU can be programmed to store fault codes which can be retrieved using a Diagnostic tester.

The 1988 models are rather crude but 1989 onwards start to get quite sophisticated where the plug in tester can actually run a series of actuation tests on various sensors and parts like the injectors etc.

Peanut, The Durametric diagnostic cable (it's a USB connection from the ECU to a PC and some software) that some of us on the 993 forum, and elsewhere, have been playing with, says it works with 944S2s.

I think that is one of the later versions? The site says there is an earlier version for 944S and 944S2 called the 9268 diagnostic tester. and the following year there was another tester which was also a hand held Bosch unit.(KTS300 & 301) I think the laptop versions came after 1991 ?

I'd be interested in the laptop version if it can be used with the pre 1990 S2

My car is 1990, the diags do not work with an aftermarket chip, well the ones I have tried anyway, i think the required sections get left out of the aftermarket chips - no suprising as most originate in the US and they had very few 89on cars.

hadn't thought of that.[&o]
Mine's an aftermarket chip too so its unlikely to have the diagnostic files either.... poo
