diamond cut wheel refurb - how many times?

I have some sport-techno wheels on my 991 which have been refurbed once. OPC reckons about twice is the limit before they lose too much metal from the re-skimming process. What do you guys think? twice, more than twice?

am asking as I've got an unsightly chip right on the visible skimmed surface on one wheel - which has been repaired before and not lasted - so needs doing again. I figure that it may be the end for it now or maybe one more skim so wondering what others think?

thanks

It depends how much they have to take off to remove the chip! Mine have been done 3 times and my chap reckons there is one more left. Of course different style wheels may have more refurbs in them than others. Mine are the Gen2 997 turbo wheels and the problem area with skimming is where the spokes meet the outer part of the rim.

Mine have been done once and I recently kerbed it again causing some damage. I was told it could be done again without any problem and as very little metal would be removed further repairs would also be possible.

maybe a bit off your turf - but platinum alloys in swindon did mine and did a good job - they have the kit to do diamond cut wheels properly in-house.

You could try Bob Moore at Southwest Wheels Repairs https://www.southwestalloys.com/ . He specialises in diamond cut wheel repairs.

Clive

This is the website for Bob Moore's place

not the one in Clive's post!
I can highly recommend SWWR - don't know about the other place on Marsh Barton as I've never used them.[;)]

Hi Clive, Thanks ever so much. Will look at the logistics. I may have to leave the car with them a few days so one option is to stay down there once the lockdown has finished.

Hi Richard. Thanks ever so much for the recommendation. This may be OK since my mother lives there.

Hi Clive, i've got a bit confused since two clives and I respond to one and wasn't sure which. Thanks for the information. Will contact them to see how I can do this in Exeter

As Alan (tscaptain) rightly says, the guy I was suggesting is https://www.southwestwheelrepairs.com/. Sorry for the confusion as I wasn't aware there were 2 wheel refinishers with similar names around the same location. But you will need to speak to Bob regarding bringing your car in as he normally deals with wheels only, although it's no problem if tyres are still fitted.

You may care to consider purchasing some winter wheels and tyres for your car (plenty of used sets on Ebay). Apart from the advantages of having winter tyres at this time of the year, you will then always have a spare set handy for just such occasions. BTW Exeter Porsche Centre is very close to SWWR. so you could always get them to do the swap for you.

Regards,

Clive

Folks,
I too have the Techo wheels on my 991 C4 (car is black too). Would value thoughts on refurb (needed due to small erosion point) vs spray all completely black as I was told this (the latter) was both easier from a repair perspective and also would require less refurb over time as diamond cut were always prone to minor erosion.

appreciate your thoughts,
Carl

diamond cut wheels are a burden to maintain - I put mine into storage for winter and put my painted winters on which keeps the worst of the grit and salt damage off them. But they do look good when they're good.
you can refurb them several times but eventually the skimming will be too much and they'll need replacing - I've not got to that point yet.
they just take a bit of care and attention - and yes they do get chipped like any wheel does - and I fix 'em.
mine also have some gtechniq wheel armour on them courtesy of adam at revolution detailing and that seems to help too.
and just had them refitted today and they all look great.

if they do get a chip and you don't want to refurb a quick touch up with a spot of laquer (from the porsche paint touch-up pair of pens) stops that until they get properly refurbed by the way.

would I paint mine ? no I live with the occasional refurb. Not personally keen on black wheels either but that's a separate question and entirely personal choice.
