Dicky fuel gauge???

Stuck £50 in yesterday, needle shot straight up to 3/4 mark. Drove for about a minute and it dropped to just above half. Noticed it seems to keep jumping up and down while I am driving. Any ideas anyone? I am guessing it should have been reading about half as it was about 43 litres I put in.

Just wondering if the gauge is dodgy or fuel sender or something??

My gauge moves around a bit and never seems to read full. If I fill it up and stop when the pump clicks off it'll read about 3/4 full. If I continue to fill after the click until I see petrol in the filler neck I can get in another £5 or so of fuel and the gauge will be about half a needle's width below full. However I can be driving along with the needle reading 3/4 and look down a few mins later to see it around half then reading 3/4 a few minutes after that. I've heard that cleaning the terminals behind the binnacle can improve or solve the stange gauge readings we get, including the volt meter that always seems to under read.

Excellent, I will have to try that over the weekend. Seems strange that it only does it when I am driving, stationary it seems to behave itself

mine was always saying it was full, this was a little issue, found out the connection behind the dash pod was loose, it could be the sender unit, it will be old and when I had an old escort the float used to leak and sometimes would fill with fuel, and give incorrect readings, worth a look

mine is back on the road now, water pump change, belt change, most fluid change including gearbox...

all ready for the road trip next weekend taking it to the ring etc. Just hope it makes it back
