Difference between 2 and 2S

Hi There,

Currently I have a 993 Targa which I love but it is getting on a bit so I'm thinking of changing.

I was going to go with a 996 Turbo and still may but I've noticed the price of 997's is now about the same level. What I dont know is the difference between a standard 2 and a 2S. Am I right in thinking that unlike the 993 the 2S 997 is narrow bodied? If so why the premium?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Sam,
Presume you are referring to a Gen 1 car? The "S" has 30 more horses. Bigger brakes which don't squeal and red calipers! [:)]. PASM as standard. 19" wheels (as against 18" on the non-S). Bi-xenon headlights. Better clutch, I think. Happy hunting.

Better clutch
? Brakes that don't squeal ? Not quite sure where that comes from. These are some issues that I'm not aware of, after 12 months C2 ownership. I'd be interested in the sourced background, though.

hi sam

the bodies of s and non s are exactly the same,--it is underneath that there are considerable differences, and if added up make a greater amount than was their difference in price when new.
extra horses, bixenons and more besides-try both s and non s on the road and you will quickly tell they are very different beasts

Hi Sam
2006 model 997 Carrera

C2 C2S

Engine 3.6 (3596cc) 3.8 (3824cc)

Power 525bhp @ 6800 355bhp @ 6600

Torque 370Nm @ 4250 400Nm @ 4600

Wheels 18" 19"

Brakes 318mm front 330mm front & rear
299mm rear

Top Speed 177mph 182mph

I hope that helps

325bhp for the 997 C2 [;)] I'd have overlooked the standard PASM, etc, etc on the S for an extra 200 horses in the standard C2 [:D]

My 2006 C2 provides more than enough ooomph for me, and stopping power to match. I'm not bothered about red calipers or xenons. The PASM I suspect is only really of use on a track and the PSM is quite amazing (tried the skid pan at Silverstone with PSM on and off and it did show it's worth). I shall ask for a test drive of an S though, just to check I'm not missing something :).

Sam

The C2 is a great car in 997 guise, agile and quick. The C2S is heavier and gruntier with active suspension that adjusts to the conditions. They really are 2 quite different cars when you drive them properly for a while. You need to get a good hours test drive in each, driving them in the style you want to when you own one. Then you'll know which is for you.

If I were you I'd also drive the 996 Turbo, its still a very special car. Personally I prefer the build quality and interior of the 997 but 4wd and that engine are a compelling package.

Buy the car that you like the most and that suits your driving syle. Then enjoy it

Have had both and two completely different cars as mentioned. The 2 is a great car, some even say the purest in the current range, but for me the 2S is a different animal all together. Yes, more BHP and yes more kit but feels more together....if that makes sense?

Thanks for all the responses and clearing up the differences between the two models. I'm suprised the two models seem to differ in character as much as you say.

Guess I'll try both and see which one fits, although I do like the idea of an S.

Cheers

I had a Gen 1 C2S tiptronic. Changed it for a C2 PDK.

The Gen 2 C2 has only 10BHP less than the old gen 1 C2S , more than enough oomph and quicker with the PDK.
Comes with BiXenons.... I specified it with 19" wheels and Sport Pack ( PASM etc ) so only missing extra power and red brakes.
It also has aluminium doors to keep weight down and can give 34mpg.
Brakes on Gen2 are upgraded from Gen1, but yes they can squeal !

Very true but looking at the original question, its seems like its a second hand buy at the sub £45k mark, if so it rules out the Gen 2 option.

The realtive cost difference of a new Gen2 PDK C2 specced up to match a seond hand Gen 1 C2S is pretty large.

If you compare apples with apples the Gen 2 Carerra and Carerra S are also very different beasts.
