Difference between 924s and 944 engine

Up to '87 MY they had a detuned (lower compression) 944 engine 8V (150bhp) but for the last year (88 MY) they had the same 160bhp as the '944. I just can't find my 'Original 924/944/968' book to quiote everything exactly!

That's pretty much it. Other than slight changes to the level of tune on the early models (via different pistons to reduce the compression ratio and, I think, an ECU change) they are identical. Parts are the same and you won't feel any difference when driving. But you do get the smoother and cleaner lines of the 924 and you'll only pay half as much as you would for an (older) 944 !!!!

Well I'd check before parting with money - don't go on my statement alone [&:]

Anyone got a copy of the PET thingy that can check this? One of the better known breakers might also know.

I have just bought a 1986 944 as a non runner and upon investigation found out number 1 cylinder was scored, as i have a 924s already for spares and rather than buy a new engine or go for a rebuild i was wondering if i could just swop the blocks over.
Who would be the best person to ask about doing this?
Thanks
Nick

Do you know what, I have a copy of PET and it doesn't help. The part numbers for the pistons are the same across the honing range, i.e. as an example 944 103 091 07 are pistons available for both models. Clutch housing numbers differ in the last digit, as do the part numbers for the cylinder heads. Con rods differ too, so you see it is not easy to categorically say for certain. I will poke around the numbers some more, but not at 3:00 am.

Have a word with Simon Butterworth at Porsch-Apart (number is PP), Simon , Dave and Steve there should all be able to help you answer your question.
Cheers,

Longer conrods with the same piston would give higher compression ratio. Not the normal way of messing though.
